America has a record high stockpile of cheese at 1.385 billion pounds

"According to the Washington Post, the cheese stockpile is so high because there's too much milk on hand for processors, and milk is more easily stored as cheese. Combine that with school being out and cows being more productive, you get the record number."

So I ask...why is milk so expensive in stores if there is such a glut?

I don't drink milk... I would keep some on hand to cook with if it did not cost so much, but I don't because of the cost so I have quit using it all together.

"America's stockpile of cheese is at its highest in more than 100 years, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

According to a report on cold storage from the USDA, America has 1.385 billion pounds o cheese in its stockpile, the highest since records started being taken in August 1917."

I knew there would be a problem from GC cutting the cheese so much.
Ahhhhhh.... they are afraid of the CO2 emissions from GC, so prices have been kept high.

Perhaps if we started a Go Fund me account to buy some Cap and Trade credits for GC, "The Man" would release some of that cheese and milk at reasonable pricing?;)

Trust me on this...you don't want him to "release" anything.

Not sure, I just bought a gallon of milk for $1 tonight at Kroger. Granted it had a July 1 date on it but around here we go through a gallon it 2-3 days easy.

So there is lots of cheese available...

I can feel the cholesterol clogging my veins now... :(

SCORE! I take it that it was marked down? Nice price

If I could get a quart of milk for a buck, I would keep milk in my fridge to use for cooking. It is never a "deal" so I don't buy it. Now I am not even sure what recipes called for milk. I think they just shifted to the back of my recipe files.

Milk is expensive? Not around here. Some brands (Mayfield) maybe priced high, but mostly around here it's cheap compared to other drinks.

Compare to 2L bottles of Coke at Kroger:

1) Milk - 2.79 a gallon - Comes from a cow that has to be fed for 6 months or so before first producing, very labor intensive to milk, has to pasteurized and refrigerated all the time and has a lifespan of weeks.
2) Coke: 1.69/2L x 2 = ~ 3.38 a gallon - Some Caramel and sweetener, mixed in with soda water. Automatic production and once sealed in the bottle, no refrigeration needed and a lifespan of months.

Milk is a DEAL compared to what Coke is getting away with!!

And, they charge the same price for a bottle of water,,, that's the ripoff!!!!

I could not believe it. :faint:My Aldis had a quart of milk for $0.99!!!!:cheer1:

I can make some Ranch Dressing, and if I don't find anything else to use the milk, or forget about it... it is no big deal. Or I can freeze the small amount leftover for baking something else later... like adding to mashed potatoes.

I hated spending almost as much on a quart as for a gallon... so I would buy the gallon... then I often wasted the remainder of the gallon because would forget about it. Or I just was not home enough to cook with it and it would spoil.

I probably had not purchased milk since December of 2017.

That ought to make a tasty bowl of cereal.

I don't eat breakfast... or cereal. I don't drink milk.

I used to use it for cooking, but to be honest I have sort of stopped cooking with milk because I never had it on hand. For 99 cents I will have it on hand to cook with now. I had been thinking about making some Ranch Dressing which I know I have not had since December. It's sort of exciting!!!:cheesy::clap2:
