A Squirrel Splurges

I splurged.

I paid quite a bit less then the advertised price. The camera is about to be discontinued, and I got mine barely used. It's a full frame camera. That means the sensor is the size of 35mm film. Most dSLRs are crop sensors, which means they are 1.6x smaller. The advantages of the full-frame sensor are less ISO noise, more pixels, better bokeh, and the focal lengths on lenses work the way they should. The main disadvantage is that the photographer loses the apparent zoom created by a crop sensor. On my old camera, my 200mm lens is effectively a 320mm lens. With the new one, it's a 200mm lens. Since the 300mm lens is quite outside my league, I've lost a lot of magnification for photographing football. Luckily I have a year to think about it. On the other side, a wide angle lens will be properly wide angle.

Since it arrived, I played with it in my classroom and at home. Tomorrow or Friday I hope to make a photographic trip. I hope to post some results soon.

One other thing: the replacement to this camera does a lot more frames per second. This older model is as limited in that regard and in focus as the Rebel T2i it replaces. This makes it less than ideal for sports. However, it will present far cleaner pictures with less ISO noise in the gym and football field. It will do better landscapes and far better bokeh.

I'm excited, and my newspaper work has funded this.

Nice!!! I have been thinking of adding and extra camera to my picture taking. I'm wanting to have two cameras ready with different lenses for football, and wrestling.

Very nice!

I've been looking at DSLR's. I have a great little Canon point 'n shoot. Ready to take on the change to the big gun.

We have had a Canon 40D since shortly after the princess was born. We love it, but I haven't even used a fraction of the features on it because the auto focus settings work so well for me.

I'm also wanting at DSLR. I just have too many other things I need to buy first.

One of these days....

I had a 40D in a past life (back when I was rich :drunkdiva) - so I know that's a helluva camera! ;)

We're about to buy a new DSLR, would you mind telling me how much less you paid? And where you got the deal?

If it was a significant savings, I'd be interesting in capitalizing on said discontinued stock!

I got mine through Amazon. Right now the new price is quite low (especially for what was originally sold as a $3000 camera). There are several used ones close to the price that I paid.

Keep in mind that this camera came out in 2008, so the autofocus system is primitive and the frame rate is slower. Nevertheless, it is a great camera and still the camera of choice for many professionals.
