If Supreme Court strikes down health care law, ‘there will be no spiking of the ball’

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the constitutionality of President Barack Obama's health care law within the next week, and House Speaker John Boehner has issued a pre-emptive warning to fellow House Republicans if parts of the law are struck down: Forget about celebrating.

In a memo sent to his entire caucus Friday, Boehner warned members not to gloat over what most Republicans would see as a victory.

"If the Court strikes down all or part of the president's health care law, there will be no spiking of the ball," Boehner wrote in the memo. "Republicans are focused on the economy—and under President Obama's policies, our economy is struggling. We will not celebrate at a time when millions of our fellow Americans remain out of work, the national debt has exceeded the size of our nation's economy, health costs continue to rise, and small businesses are struggling to hire."...

I understand why he doesn't want GOP members of the House "spiking the ball" once the SCOTUS rules in favor of removing much of Obamacare. Doing so would cause greater resentment from the Dems and could hurt GOP members running for reelection. Being gracious winners is always best.

:thumbsup That is what I was thinking.
I will probably (well I say that now :))) only rejoice here. Other places people get very hostile and tell me I do not care about people dieing in the streets! (though I am not sure where people are just keeling over and dieing, but it must be prevalent because I have heard that from many on the other side of this issue. :dunno)

I agree with what he's getting at. Politicians should not celebrate it. We the people can be happy about it and he certainly isn't telling the American people what to do. It would be inappropriate for our elected officials to "spike the ball" on most matters like this ... IMHO

Yep.

And, if they strike down the mandate only, it could actually make an already disastrous bill even worse.

We'd better hope and pray they kill the whole thing, but I suspect they won't.

I'm pretty sure about this - the bill was written WITHOUT severability. That is to say, the mandate cannot be severed from the bill and the bill survive without it. If the mandate is struck down, the bill is dead.

I personally think it will give conservatives a platform to point out how so much time was wasted on an unconstitutional mandate at a time that Americans were hurting for jobs. Hurting for jobs while the 0bama flunkies were setting up the worst environment for business"

I believe the health care law has been hurting our economy... the regulations , taxes, penalties, and mandates in 0bamacare are holding back private business growth and job creation. That, and all his other overreaching policies.... :tapfoot2

Do I get why Republican "leaders" shouldn't spike? Sure. I don't need that explained. But, I'll be happy. Then maybe that pariah on our economy will go away.
