JFK might have been the last of his kind, as Democratic presidents go. He was perceived as a Massachusetts liberal, so LBJ was brought in as a southern conservative Democrat for balance. Ironically; Kennedy was more of a fiscal conservative than the majority or either Republicans or Democrats today, and LBJ was a Socialist Democrat in many ways. Kennedy was the one who championed tax cuts to spur economic growth; the same kind of tax cuts that today's Democratic party rails against as only benefiting the rich.
JFK was also fiercely anti-Communist; another major contrast from today's Democratic party.
And he was one of only two of the Kennedy men at the time who were any good. The other good one (Bobby) was assassinated as well. Their Dad, Joseph, was a crook and a jerk. And we all remember Teddy. They all seemed to do their share of womanizing though.
I absolutely believe that he was killed because they couldn't control him.
