Memorial Day weekend gasoline prices are at their highest level in seven years as American motorists hit the road for what experts are calling “revenge travel.”

The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by a penny since Monday, to $3.04, according to AAA. Memorial Day weekend prices have not been this high since 2014, when they averaged $3.65 a gallon. The average is 17 cents more than last month and $1.12 more expensive than last year.

“The industry is referring to it as ‘revenge travel,’” AAA spokesperson Jeanette McGee said. “People have more discretionary income, they’ve got a lot of PTO, or paid time off, saved up, so they’re going to take more trips and spend more money.”

AAA estimates 37 million Americans will travel by car and plane on Memorial Day weekend. That’s up 60% from last year, when many were cautious about the pandemic and stayed home. But it is still 13% below pre-pandemic travel levels reached during 2019′s Memorial Day weekend.

While the Colonial Pipeline is back in operation and deliveries are being made, some stations in the Southeast continue to experience supply strain. This is likely to extend into the holiday weekend, but motorists will be able to fill up.

I was driving home the other night- early morning - and as I looked at the price of gas at the corner station, it changed from $3,99 to $4.04 for regular, I did not look at price below for premium as I drove past.... but I thought, "Oh crap.... this is the long weekend and I am at 1/4 of a tank." :banghead:

I live 12 miles from work so I can go a few more days,, but I haven't had time to drive to Costco and fill up. I wonder how much higher it will be by the time I get over there? I should have filled up last week prior to prices rising. I get over 350 miles to a tank so I could have ridden out the holiday weekend prices.

We are booked pretty full at the hotel the next two months. We often book 3 days out, people decide last minute to drive in from Nevada, Arizona, or parts north in California. They often book as they are driving in, or just walk in and hope for a room- so we are seeing very high demand well in advance of the travel date. The market is hot. Those that travel without a hotel reservation are going to find it tough to get reasonable rates in the area they want to stay.

I finally hired two more front desk agents... started training yesterday. Crossing my fingers they like working for us, and we like working with them.:cheesy:

Gas reached $2.86/gal while the pipeline was "hacked." As of this morning, the price has dropped down to $2.86. I'm beginning to think now the pipeline wasn't hacked, that it was a scam to raise prices. When Kemp suspended the $0.20/gal fuel tax, you didn't see prices at the pumps drop that amount. As a matter of fact, they didn't drop at all.

Ouch... in a non-pandemic year what was normal?
Varies with volume and time of year, but the highest we've ever paid was $14,000 after Katrina.

Business is very good right now, so the fuel bill being up is not altogether a bad thing. Still hard to write such a big check though.

Average price for Regular gas over the 2019 Memorial Day weekend was $2.86 per gallon. It is $3.04 today. Most of that difference is due to increased demand in China, the fact that more people are expected to travel by car this weekend than in 2019, and sticky prices and spot retail shortages associated with the Colonial shutdown. Keep in mind that Keystone was not completed, and as much as I think Biden's economic and environmental policies will be a disaster, none have taken effect.

I will politely disagree with you on this. Just his words, his attitude, his hostile policies have had an effect.

I agree. Looked at what happened to gas prices after he shutdown the Keystone pipeline. This increase also increased the cost of transporting goods to stores, which in turn increases the prices customers have to pay. The inflation rate for 2020 was 1.25%. So far for 2021, it's 2.26 and projected at 2.4 for 2022.
