this school and Belmont are my DD's top 2 choices

I hear Belmont is a tad more expensive than Vandy

The chick we were speaking with kinda laughed at me when I learned that it would be $59,000 a year ... I am still speechless. I know Ashlyn can get grants and scholarships to help out... But 59GRAND!!!!!

Who wants to donate? ;D

Are you kidding? It's been all I could do to pay around 20 grand a year for KSU.

Didn't borrow a dime though.

YOWSA!!! Well, excellent choices, but YOWSA!!! Get this - I have a good friend who is just warped, bless her heart. It's because of her evil father, but I digress. Anyhoo, she's old Nashville money, and her grandmother told her if she'd go to her alma mater, Vanderbilt, she would pay friend's way. Friend declined and insisted on going to UGA. CARAZY!!

Can Ashlyn be their friend!!! I come from No money if that counts for anything

Tell her to get her backside to the counselor's office and to have them help her find out every possible scholarship out there for Vandy and for her major and have her start applying for them yesterday! Next, find out what the school's policy is on how out of state students can establish residency, if it applies at a private university (for some states, she will have to change her DL, register to vote, have bills mailed to her in state, etc). She won't be able to do it her first year, but may qualify for in-state tuition her second or third year.

You and me both. I went on scholarships and grants. And their money's gone anyway. Evil father done spunt it all.

Vanderbilt is a private school. There is no "in-state" or "out-of-state". I had a dear friend go there back when Dinosaurs roamed the earth, and it was very pricey even back then. There were scholarships available on the basis of need, and there are always loans, but if you are counting on a scholarship on the basis of grades, you can give up. ALL the kids there are straight "A" students with high SAT scores. Back then, anyway, the only way a middle class student could survive and pay for school there was to live like a pauper and get a part time job.

If you are going for something in the medical field, it could be worth every penny and every Ramen dinner. Emory is actually a very good value for medicine and law, however, if you are unable to swing Vandy.

Granted it may not have in-state tuition, but she should apply for absolutely every scholarship for which she is eligible - if she doesn't apply, she has no chance of getting one (or more). If she does apply, there is a chance (however slight) that she could get one. No harm, no foul.

no worries... she will be applying for scholarship in her sleep

My good friend (who's wedding I will be in January) graduated from Vanderbilt. Excellent school.
