He could have brought in a retired Colonel or General who served in military intelligence.

Sounds like another poor selection. One good point is since it's already assumed he's "out of the closet" no foreign agent can use that to bribe or influence him. Which leads to an odd question: I wonder if any gay diplomat has even been bribed over the discover that they secretly had a partner of the opposite sex?
