Truck doesn\'t want to idle

I have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma and after you have been driving it a while any time you come to a stop it will drop the idle to barely over 200, it usually idles around 1000. If you rev the motor up to about 4000 before you come to a stop it will idle almost normal. It is really weird. I believe it is a Idle control valve? Been told could be an idle control motor, not even sure it has one. I was wondering if anyone has experience or equipment that they can hook it up to diagnose the problem? On the cheap as I am broke. Thanks!

I think most places will hook it up to a machine and test it for free. Check with Nick with Nicks Automotive at corner of Rosedale and SunnyLand Drive. I think he may give you a free diagnosis.

This is a generic answer, but fuel injected engines have a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) that is a solenoid which controls the throttle position. It will vary the position according to load and other factors such as whether the A/C is on to maintain a certain idol speed.

I would say either the solenoid is bad, or you have a bad sensor causing the computer to not properly control it.

As mentioned above, most auto parts will scan it for you to see if you have any error codes stored in the computer. That will often tell you when you have a bad sensor, and which one is bad.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the repsonses and GD you are the first one to bring that up. Everyone else says I dle Control valve.
