This irritates the hound out of me

Many people know that the Chief and I are pet lovers. We adopted a pure German Shepherd yesterday. We found that many of the dogs they have were found at Fort Stewart. Apparently, transferring personnel will just leave their dogs to fend for themselves. When they are found, the Army will hold them for 3 days then put them down. I expect better from our Army people.
The Shelter takes as many as they can but are very limited, they have 165 dogs average and are a no kill shelter. Because of the economy, even pure breeds are being left at the shelter. We gave them extra money, above the adoption fees, for food. I'll start driving the 30 miles, one way, a least every week to drop off dry food to them.

This is a major problem all over, and sadly there isn't an easy answer for it. But like you, I hate to see domesticated animals mistreated or uncared for.

Thankfully, caring people like you do what they can to help.

I was never permitted to have a dog when I was living with my parents. Mrs. Reacher and I have grown to love our dogs. They are like family. We couldn't stand leaving them behind... :'(

Wow, I can't imagine this. Maybe someone should form a rescue group (for service people only) to find adoptive parents to take the babies until the owners return. Geez this is so sad. Fox just ran into this himself and could have used an organization of this type. I bet the owners would be willing to pay for their keep too. :love

There are times when units and individuals deploy on short notice making it very difficult to find other homes for pets. You all witnessed this with me. I had someone who was willing to take all three dogs, only to back out less than a week before I had to leave. Thank God I had a network of friends on the highway to help me out and all three dogs are being taken care of. A lot of soldiers don't have the network of friends in the area they are stationed in. I and my dogs were very fortunate. The military is not going to give soldiers extra time to find homes for their pets.

There are a few organizations that help with pets under these circumstances, but even they great difficulty finding homes for the pets as well. Many of these organizations are nothing more than a network of volunteers with no resources to kennel and care for the dogs while finding new or foster homes for them.

Soldiers do know they can deploy or be transferred to a new base and overseas. They often forget these facts before they get a pet. I can't blame them for wanting pets, but they need to plan ahead for this before they do select or buy a pet.

It is so sad! After our cat was attacked and we had to put her down about a month ago, I took the kids to the shelter. I saw first hand just how many animals are being left at the shelter. We happened to go in on a Tues, which if you didn't already is the day that you can adopt animals that are on the list to be put down for only $10, and decided to adopt 2 kittens that were on that list. My heart broke that they were going to have to put not only older animals, but also little babies down. While we were there, we saw 2 dogs and a litter of kittens turned in. It is for this reason that we always adopt our pets from the shelter.

As for the people in the military, I understand how it can be difficult to find a home for the animals when you are told you will be leaving within the week. It is sad that they feel they have no other option than to just leave them behind.

Which is why I just cannot go to the shelter. It tears me up just reading about it, and I was sick about Fox's dog, and then thrilled when I found out y'all took him in. I'm a huge fan of adopting from the shelter (although my last two have found me, showing up on my doorstep), but I'd have to have someone else to go get it for me.

We're doing a job at one of the animal control buildings right now. Not easy.

BTW, Callahan, it took me awhile to figure out who you are. The name change threw me.

I do love that car, though. ;)

I'm glad you were able to figure it out. Sometimes I like to change things up. Still, the same old me. I'm happy to see you didn't change yours, even after the sex change.

I decided to drive the Thunderbird down the highway. Who wants to race? She will pass everything but a gas station.
