The Democrats will be happy about this

From Steve Horwitz. What Steve doesn't point out here is that he is battling aggressive cancer and additional monies from the Kochs allow him to continue to teach online classes at Ball State and to publish from home. They didn't have to make such an offer to Ball State, to pick up a bigger portion of his salary while on sick leave or to arrange for online classes. They did it because it was the right thing to do and they expect nothing in return.

For my friends who think that scholars who are affiliated with or funded by Koch-funded organizations are paid hacks, you should know that I have been associated with Koch-funded organizations for almost 35 years. They never paid any of my salary until the last year or two, but I did paid work for them. In all of that time, not once have I have been told what to think or write, or who to invite as a speaker. I've never been called out for criticizing positions the Kochs have taken, or strategies they've adopted. I've never worked with a grantor who gives grantees more freedom to pursue their visions as they see them, or to say what they want at student seminars etc, than I have with these organizations.I am extraordinarily proud of my association with the Kochs and their projects. They have helped make me who I am as a scholar and a teacher. With that in mind...

1. If you think I'm a paid hack, please have the honesty and guts to say it explicitly. Don't beat around the bush. Don't talk about "Koch scholars." Look me in the virtual eye and say it. Call me an "intellectual whore." I'll respect you more if you do. Otherwise, you're just blowing smoke.

2. Do a little research. Go look at the schools where the Kochs have funded projects. Find out which faculty are involved in them. Then go hunt down their CVs and compare them to those of their colleagues at those schools. I'm willing to bet that the scholars working with Koch funding have, on average, notably stronger CVs in terms of academic books and peer-reviewed articles than their departmental colleagues. Perhaps the reason why people GET funding from the Kochs is that they are the very opposite of paid hacks.

3. Consider my own case. If you think I'm a paid Koch hack, you must believe that the Kochs' influence is way wider and deeper in academia than anyone else thinks. Do the Kochs control Westview Press, Routledge, and Palgrave Macmillan, ensuring the publication of my three books? Do they control the editorial boards of the Southern Economic Journal, History of Political Economy, or Cambridge Journal of Economics (which tilts left, hilariously) or any of dozens of other journals that have published my 60 or so peer-reviewed articles? Just how wide and deep is the Koch conspiracy? Perhaps, again, Koch-funded scholars have that status because we have done good work as judged by the standards of our disciplines, not because we're paid hacks.

It's a little out of date, but here's a recent CV of mine. Judge for yourself.

The vast majority of those bloviating about the Kochs and academia and policy research have no clue WTF they are talking about.

Whatever things in my life I have to apologize for, working with the Kochs will never be one of them. I'm very proud to be associated with them for well over three decades.

Steve
