The public evidence for this is slight. It supposes quite a lot from the statements of one Chinese doctor that the first infections were in another part of town away from the wet market and were in December. I'm not saying it was or it wasn't released from there by accident, but the government would have to know a lot that hasn't been publicly disclosed in scientific journals.

There is nothing about the virus itself that would suggest this. Perhaps the most "suspicious" thing about the virus itself was that it appears to have made a single jump from being a bat only virus to one that can not only pass from bat to man, but from man to man also. Usually there is a period when such a virus can only be caught from the animal and is not transmittable from human to human. So far this intermediate version of the virus has apparently not been found. It isn't unheard of, and the structure of the virus makes this possible, but it would be out of the ordinary.
