I love my country. I took the Oath which still stands today and I'm proud of my service even though it was cut shorter than I would have preferred. Things worked out in the long run so I have zero regrets. The military route is a great start for some people (not all) and it doesn't mean you have to stay 20+ years if it's not a good fit once you're in.
Having said that now I'll now say.....I would much prefer my kids or grandkids to serve and die in the military than being killed here on the streets by a thug. It chaps my behind when I think of how much senseless crime is carried out in our communities. It's sad to think that those who serve in our military are actually "safer" than people on our streets.
