'Old people smell' is real, experts say — here's how to avoid it as you age

I think older adults smell because they cut corners and don't bathe daily. They re-wear clothes that should be laundered.

My mom needed help bathing the last year of her life. At first it was just help making sure she was safe stepping into and out of the bathtub. It was due to loss of muscle strength.

I got her a shower chair. That helped.

If left to her own wishes she would have showered every 3 to 5 days.

I made sure it was at least a shower daily for her body, and did my best to have her wash her hair every other day. She would try to bargain to wait another day to wash her hair.

She would say she did not sweat.

I told her I disagreed, that her arm pits smell like BO, and her butt needed to be washed. Get in the shower.

Most weeks, I would round up all her clothes that she had worn and wash them. She would hang clothes back up in the closet after wearing them, or put them in a pile on the chair, folded to wear again.

It I smelled the BO or body oil smell... They got washed.

She would complain. I told her I'm not going to have you be that old smelly lady with stains on all your clothes walking around in public.

Yeah, we went through some of that with our parents.

The oddest thing I found. I would clean her arm pits. Mine when I raise my arm or put it out to scrub with soap and washcloth are flat... There is muscle under there.

Mom's was like an upside down bowl. I had to really get into a small area and scrub for her... With her protesting. Finally I got a big puffy scrub thing. It worked much better than the washcloth.

Our body shape changes as we age, lose weight, and muscle mass.

Mom had polio at age 4. Lucky for her it just took the muscles in her her upper right arm That arm did not work properly. No shoulder muscle deltoid, trapezius, or bicep muscle. The last few years were hard, so I helped.

We laughed a lot. When bathing and dressing her. :love1:
