Owl o'clock

Old Wives tell if an owl hoots outside your window three nights in a row it is a sign of death. You can turn a shoe upside down under the bed and it will go away. Seriously I heard this as a child from people who absolutely believed it.
What if they were right ?

What if they were right ?
Can't say that they were not. They were not book smart but one was a "sign" reader and knew more about the natural world than anyone I have ever known. He was in his 80's in the late 60's. He could predict weather better than any of these actors on the news now, he could smell a snake 100' away, he raised bees and could change the flavor of honey by adjusting the structure of the hives, he could grow a massive garden in the worst soil you can imagine, he could tame the most vicious dog you know without speaking to it, he could fix anything you came up with cars/tractors/mowers/gates/sewing machines/ tools/ woodwork/ animals/ etc., he knew every sign and counter sign for any situation, he could quote the bible verbatim but I am not sure he was literate. I have often wished I was a little older when he was alive and could have documented some of his knowledge. He was an amazing man.

I had a older gentleman down the street that I wish I had been able to document. Mr Wright. I never knew his first name.

I cut grass for him while in High school, and spent one afternoon mesmerized as he told me about his job on the front in WWI. He was with the chemical weapons groups and he went out after an attack and collected the gas tanks that were launched at the allies and took them back to be tested so he could determine if the Germans were using anything new. He told me of being in the field when a sudden attack occurred and the sound that the gas tanks made going over head before they hit and discharged. I can still hear him in my head and see his arms showing the tumbling action. This was in the late 70's, and he was a corporal in 1918-19, so figure he was in his 80's/90's at that time.

He loved doing odd mathematical and geometrical things. He had all kinds of geometric designs all in the woods around the house and told me about them at various times.

There are some amazing people in this world that we lose and we never know it...
