Homestead Exemption

You may be eligible for a homestead exemption. In order to qualify for a homestead exemption, the applicant's name must appear on the deed to the property and they must own, occupy and claim the property as their legal residence on January 1 to be eligible for any exemption for that tax year. The applicant may claim exemptions on only one property; this includes other Georgia counties and other states.
Voters within the City of Hiram approved a special homestead exemption in 2017.
· Qualified owner(s) within the City Limits of Hiram under the age of 65 will be eligible for a $40,000 exemption from City of Hiram ad valorem taxes. The $40,000 is deducted from the 40% assessed value of the homesteaded property.
· Qualified owner(s) within the City of Hiram between the age of 65 and 69 will be eligible for a $55,000 exemption from City of Hiram ad valorem taxes. The $55,000 is deducted from the 40% assessed value of the homesteaded property.
· Qualified owner(s) within the City of Hiram over the age of 70 will be eligible to be exempted from all City of Hiram ad valorem taxes.
Exemption applications are accepted year round; however applications must be received before April 1st of the year in which the exemption is to be applied. You must provide legal evidence of residency and United States citizenship, such as a Georgia driver's license or Georgia ID card. Exemptions are not automatic and each exemption must be applied for individually.
Homeowners over the age of 65 may qualify for school tax exemption. There are specialized exemptions for homeowners with a total and permanent disability, veterans with 100% service connected disability, unremarried surviving spouse of a disabled veteran, and the unremarried surviving spouse of a peace officer or firefighter killed in the line of duty. Additional documentation is required to apply for these exemptions.
The applicant must reapply for any exemptions if a name changes or change of ownership occurs due to marriage, death or divorce; a copy of a recorded deed, marriage certificate or divorce decree must be provided.

You must notify the Tax Assessors office in the event you no longer qualify for an exemption.
Homeowners can apply for a homestead exemption at the Tax Assessors Office, located at 240 Constitution Blvd, in the Watson Government Complex on the 3rd floor of the Administration Building in Dallas, GA 30132, contact Board of Tax Assessors Office at 770-443-7606 or visit the Assessor’s website at paulding.gov for more information.
