...I just got back from the State Cross Country meet in Dickinson, ND. It was my first sports adventure with the new camera (a Canon 5d Mark ii). It's a full frame camera and prior to this I always used a crop sensor.

I really had to relearn composition and rethink lenses. These pictures weren't the best: I probably should have taken my old camera instead (I haven't sold it yet). However, I love the way this camera worked at high ISO: I was able to shoot at 1/8000 speed. It captured the snow very well. Although I won't have as many difficult choices in which picture to keep, the ones I'm keeping were wonderful. This was great. Once I learn this camera, I'm going to have great pictures. Too bad I won't get them at a State event for a few years. Cross Country is the only state event that Dickinson is capable of hosting.

I hope to post the pictures either tonight or tomorrow morning. As cold as I was, I'm going to get something out of it! The kids don't look their best (hats, scarfs, tights, etc. as protection from cold).

So Waski, how do you know if a camera has the full frame imager?

I've been looking at a couple, but can't tell.

Both Nikon, and Cannon have a bundle that you can buy. Check it out at Best Buy or Sam's. That's what I went with for my Nikon.

I'm thinking about going to a Cannon, mainly because it's so much lighter. However, I tend to stay with things I already know, and Cannon seems to be more expensive with the accessories.

I have two cameras, one uses 35mm film and the second will develope the picture right before your eyes.

I've eyeballed some cameras at Sam's Club, but I have bigger priorities.

Very few actually have a full frame sensor. My new one does, but my old one did not. In the Canon world, the 5d and new 6d ranges have a full frame sensor as does the 1d range (which is really expensive). I've heard Canon will soon discontinue the Canon 5d Mark ii in favor of the Mark ii and the 6d. That's how I was able to purchase a Mark ii at a relatively low cost. Nikon has a few full-frame, but you would need to research on Amazon or their website. Usually the dSLR cameras say somewhere whether they are crop or full frame. A lot of the crop sensors are 1.5 or 1.6 crop, unless you drop down to the point and shoot type cameras.

The crop sensors are actually pretty good. I upgraded to full frame mostly for ISO noise and so my lenses would do what I expected. I had a 3 megapixel gain over my Canon Rebel (18 on the rebel, 21 on the 5d), but that's useful mostly for cropping after the picture is taken. With the crop sensor you get the advantage of an apparent zoom. For example, on the Rebel, my 200mm lens was equivalent to a 320mm lens on a full frame sensor, since the crop sensor detects less of the projected image. I'm not sure how well the full frame will do in football insofar as getting close to the action. Luckily, that's a year away. I may be able to buy a cheaper lens for football, or make do with fewer megapixels as I crop the photos I take with the lens I already have.

Football is what I mostly take photos of. I'm looking at a couple of 300 lenses for my Nikon 3100. I already have a 200 lens, and I like the zoom on it. I really want to get the players faces when I get the pictures. I seemed to have some issues with that this season.

What settings do you use for your gym pics? 13 year old wrestles as well, and I would love to get some really good shots.

I got mine for my birthday last year. I have a lot to learn with all the settings, and such.
