NBA in China

Ironically this points out what Trump is trying to undo... Shift the power from China. China holds all the cards even though China is the worst country to have with that much authority.

Mitch Albom: Price for the NBA in China? Its soul
It was a short tweet. Only seven words. But it ripped the façade off of two giant forces, the Chinese government and the National Basketball Association, and exposed their hypocrisies in a sobering light. If you’ve ever doubted the power of free speech, and the perils of silence, you need only to have watched the events of last week.

“Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong.” Those were the seven words, tweeted out by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, a man who, when it comes to famous names in the NBA, is on the same level as the team trainer. He’s not a player. He’s not recognizable. He deleted the tweet shortly after he posted it.

But that didn’t stop China, the most populous nation on the planet, from going berserk. The government-owned TV network canceled televising the NBA exhibition games being played there. The internet streaming was canceled as well. The Chinese Basketball Association suspended all association with the Houston Rockets. And China’s consul general in Houston demanded the team “immediately correct the mistakes.”

When the NBA made a statement explaining Morey’s First Amendment rights, the CCTV network quickly countered that "any remarks that challenge (China’s) national sovereignty and social stability are not within the scope of freedom of speech.”

Shortly after that, all 11 of the NBA’s official partners in China — from a travel company to a fast food chain — suspended their ties with the league.

All this for a tweet that the Chinese people couldn’t even see — because Twitter is banned in China.

<snip>
You stand for something or you fall for anything. Right now, the NBA, which has been so proud of standing for democratic principles, is having its spine tested by a marriage it couldn’t help itself from rushing into, because the bride was just so rich. China continues to seduce American businesses. But we’re starting to see the real price of all those billions.

Isn't this the same NBA that got up in arms because NC wanted to make men and women use the proper bathrooms?

As highlighted by LifeSiteNews, the NBA effectively boycotted the state of North Carolina back in 2016 by pulling the league’s annual All-Star Game out of Charlotte due to the state’s law barring transgender individuals from entering a bathroom not corresponding to their biological sex. At the time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver gave the state a deadline to repeal the “discriminatory” law or else face having the game pulled. “I don’t see how we would get past this summer without knowing definitively where we stand,” he said.

Come July of that year, the NBA officially announced that the All-Star Game at issue would not take place in Charlotte, North Carolina — the league opted for New Orleans, instead.

“While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by [the transgender law],” the league stated at the time.

Two faced jackasses is what they are.

Two faced jackasses is what they are.
Sure is... that is why it is such a joke... Trump is right to hold China to task. Make them dance a little to trade with us.

Oooops....

Hong Kong Protestors Voice Disappointment in LeBron James: "He Supports Totalitarianism?"
Tuesday in a stream of sarcastic retweets.

LeBron James, usually held up as a progressive icon, is getting slammed for the comments he made Monday night criticizing Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey for his recent tweet in support of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement.

"I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke," James said of Morey. "So many people could have been harmed, not only financially, but physically, emotionally, spiritually."

The remarks from James, arguably the world's most influential basketball player, sparked a wave of backlash on social media both stateside and internationally, with U.S. politicians, Hong Kong protestors and other observers questioning whether the Lakers star was just the latest sports and entertainment industry leader to put business interests in China ahead of democratic values.

Between LeBron and Kerr you’ve got some pretty well-known social justice sports guys whose social justice begins in America but ends at Communist China’s doorstep. Or put another way — willing to give Americans a hard time but not any Chinese.
