Kim Potter trial: Minneapolis jury reaches verdict in Daunte Wright shooting

Wow, I feel very bad for her.

The jury has found former Minneapolis-area police Officer Kim Potter guilty of first and second degree manslaughter charges in the April 2021 death of Daunte Wright.

Kim Potter, 49, could face a maximum sentence of 15 years for the first degree manslaught charge, while second degree charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

I am really bothered by this. I've never been a cop but I know that they sometimes get stuck in potentially dangerous situations where they have to make split second decisions while under duress. I wasn't able to watch all the testimony in this case, but I believe this woman was in such a situation and she made an honest human error. I don't believe for one minute that she ever had any intention of killing this kid.

Is she responsible for her mistake? Well, yeah, but I don't believe she should go to prison for it. This is sending a very bad message to police officers everywhere.

Add to that, the kid was a fugitive with a rap sheet and he resisted arrest. No, he shouldn't have died from it, that is terribly unfortunate. But the fact is that NONE of thi swould have happened if not for the choices he made.

In that situation, the adrenaline is pumping through your body. It's not uncommon in those situations where you lose your peripheral vision. She is right-handed. She most likely does everything right-handed. I can see where she pulled her handgun thinking she was getting the tazer. That doesn't excuse her negligence. She was definitely overcharged in this. Involuntary manslaughter would have been a more realistic charge.

There's no doubt in my mind had she been a black police officer who had done this, they would have gone with an involuntary manslaughter charge.
