We took a break last week but were back with Brandon picking up the mantel. This week we are talking about General Contractors Licensing Requirements.

Thanks Mark for posting this - great information and gives us all a heads up at what to look for in a contractor.

Mark, do you know if there is a certain dollar amount limit that a "contractor" can do without having to be licensed, or is there any such category? Someone did some work on one of my Mom and Dad's rental houses to the tune of about $20,000.00 and we can't find where he has a contractor's license.

The total can't exceed Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500.00). And yes, the SOS site is where you search for contractors. I've been warning folks for a while that if you hire someone that isn't licensed and they are doing work exceeding $2,500.00 be careful. If they were to get injured my guess is their insurance company wouldn't pay a claim for someone that wasn't carrying the proper state license to do the work. And if I had to guess I'd say the next in line is the customer's home owner's hazard policy. But of course that's just a guess on my part.
