I think the Southern Baptists may have gotten it right...

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
The Southern Baptists did pass a resolution about the Boy Scouts, but it wasn't to tell their member churches not to sponsor the scouts - it was simply to tell them to make it an emphasis to share the gospel with the troop if they do sponsor them. (Which I don't think it an outrageous request at all).

"I think this resolution was a resolution of kindness, to say the churches that choose to continue with the scouting ministry should do so with an emphasis on sharing the gospel," said David Dykes, a pastor from Tyler, Texas. "As a pastor I appreciate that the convention does not tell churches what we should do."

:agreed

I know one thing the Southern Baptist have right; you stand for a song, you sit for a song, you stand for a song, you sit for a song, you stand for a song.
You always know whether or not you need to stand or sit.

We always stand to sing (except during the offering).

It's worse - there have been a few times where we have stood up during the offertory song, but only after the collection plates have left the sanctuary. We are civilized after all...

And sing first, second, and fourth stanza of every hymn. No more, no less.

Well, sometimes you sing the last verse "one more time, for that person who is struggling with coming down".

I know this is a bad question for a Baptist to ask, but we sing that verse one more time for someone who is coming down, but shouldn't we also sing it one more time for the person that is struggling with writing their tithe check?

Yep, gonna have to mention that one to the preacher - he will like that idea... ;D

Absolutely NOT!! Wednesday night is for supper and Bible study. No tithing allowed (unless you count bringing some extra chicken to send home with the preacher)... :girlsaysno

What many fail to realize is that the SBC doesn't "control" member churches. And not all Baptist churches are members of the SBC.

You are so correct.
The SBC cannot "make" a church that is a member do or not do anything.
All they can do is withdraw the church's memebership.

Did the SBC not also resolve to petition the BSA to remove and replace the current board? I'm not sure how affective that will be though. I'm glad that they didn't recommend dropping sponsorships.

They may not "control" the member churches, but, as one of our leaders shared with me this week, the member churches take those resolutions very seriously and generally follow them to the letter.

I would dare say that most churchs do.
But I have also seen those resolutions ignored or "bent" where it suited the church.
(perhaps suited is not the best word, but you get the idea)

Absolutely. As someone once said, sometimes, the rules in church depend upon who is writing the biggest check... (not that I am saying this about my church or any other, of course).
