I had to read the headline twice...

...and then I laughed 3 times.

Just so I understand clearly, he wants $80B now so the IRS can collect what's already due. Got it. How about
collecting what's due then save taxpayers the additional $80B.

Lets face it, paying taxes has pretty much been a volunteer effort for the last 20 years.

They try to scare you with all the notices that "a copy of this document has been sent to the IRS!" but unless you are the unlucky 0.00001% that get audited, they never even try to compare all that crap to your return. It's too freaking complicated for a computer to do it and they don't have near the staff to do any of it manually.

The stories of the people who send in returns with fake W-2s and claim hundreds of thousands in refunds and the IRS sends it without a blink shows they never cross check what you claim and all the huge mass of data in their data systems. Its all a joke.

That 80 billion would pay for an army of auditors that would look much more closely at high-earner and corporation taxes, and hopefully find enough "errors' and cheating to generate more than they cost.

Well, that's not exactly accurate. One day several years ago an IRS agent knocked on our door while I was at work and the Queen was home with the kids. Let's just say she wasn't exactly aware of any pending tax issue. Needless to say the phone call that immediately followed wasn't a very good one and I rushed home to speak with the agent. Afterwards I then went out to buy flowers and dinner for the Queen in an attempt to soften her up before the argument which I predicted was about to occur. Guess what...my prediction was right...she was some kind of ticked off.

Surprisingly though, the agent was extremely polite and was actually helpful in clearing up the issue. And for the record, we've never had another tax issue since and we never will. My free advice is to pay your tax liabilities in full and on time. You don't have to smile...but you do have to pay.

Like I said, if you are in the unlucky 0.00001% that they check, yeah they can get you. But otherwise...

I wish I could say it was an audit. It was more like 3 consecutive years of not filing at all. Again, my free advice is not to try it. One of those lessons we hardheads eventually learn.
Their computer system will flag someone who hasn't paid in a few years.

Yeah, my FIL decided he hadn't had to pay for several years, so had me quit filing for him. I hope it doesn't backfire on him.
