Very hard to run a business as the people have no incentive to work unless they are paid under the table so that they don't lose their welfare benefits.

A new report by Cato Institute, which examines the state-by-state value of welfare for a mother of two, said benefits in Hawaii average $49,175 — tops in the nation.
Michael Tanner, co-author of the Cato study, said that since welfare isn’t taxed, a person would have to earn $60,590 in Hawaii to take home the same $49,175 a person on welfare would.

Yep... my son and DIL just moved to the mainland. They had a sweet 5 bedroom 3 bath house Big Island, Kona side for only $2300... but everything in life was expensive.I watched one of the home shows (like This Old House, etc) that was on location in Hawaii awhile back. They don't have a lot of natural resources, so almost everything has to be brought in by air or sea. Lumber and building materials were crazy high!
