Hostess announced today that it would permanently close plants in Seattle, St. Louis, and Cincinnati effective today. This is in response to Friday's nationwide strike against the floundering company by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union when negotiations failed to reach a new contract agreement. Hostess needs to gain concessions from the union to avoid bankruptcy. It is the opinion of Hostess/Wonder Bread management that the union is willing to sacrifice Hostess employees to prevent other larger baking companies from seeking similar concessions. This first round of closures will effect over 600 full time employees.
The Teamster's Union, which also serves Hostess, has so far refused to honor the strike and will continue to handle and deliver Hostess products until it reviews the situation.
