Fur explosion

Cheyenne (she is the Chief's 90 pound dog) is already shedding her winter coat. Maybe that means a mild winter. I'm having to do the floors and furniture every day. I think I'm just going to shave her and the Chief will think she has a gigantic chihuahua. :D

Our late pooch (man I miss her) was a long-haired dog. We vacuumed every day to keep the hair off the floor, and it was all over the basement. After she died, I spend an entire day just cleaning up hair down there.

What kind of dog?
She is a German Shepherd.
I should have been able to guess that. My first two would blow out their undercoats around this time each year. (Actually, they started around the end of November.) What a mess! Not only did I have to deal with all of the individual hairs that came out, they also threw "hamster" clumps. It was craziness!

And they did it twice a year.

Great, thanks for that. Maybe she's not early after all. It does make a mess. She is a sweet girl. We got her to spot Terminators.

They're such great dogs, though ... it's worth putting up with the undercoat mess. And, you can get undercoat combs and try to get ahead of the shedding.

Marty, our Jack Russell Terrorist, doesn't shed too bad, but we do notice a good bit when we sweep and vaccum. Bella, I call her a min-wawa but she's actually a chin-pin (sp) sheds like CRAZY when she is upset. Typically it's while driving to the vet

Now, Tucker, Daughter Reacher's dog, sheds like there's no tomorrow!

Oh, here's Marty and his bone

One day, I'll figure out how to post pictures. JR, you have some beautiful, well loved dogs. That's what I like. Most excellent. Our Vet makes house calls, they don't like the surprise.

I know what you mean, GD. I use to laugh at middle aged people and the way they acted with their dogs. Well, now that's us. I dread the day something happens to one of ours. I'm sorry about yours. They do leave a big hole in your family when they pass.

This is what Duke is doing too. It freaked me out like something was wrong. Glad to hear it is probably normal!

So am I. Thanks UM. I brushed her out and there was enough fur to make a whole other dog. Cheyenne was on the couch last night. I was aggravating her and she snarled at me. I tell you, that was one scary looking dog! :D

Yep, if you have large amounts of the superfine fur you're dealing with undercoat blow out. Your best friend to do battle against it (other than vacuums and lint rollers lol ) is something called an undercoat rake. There are some other new products out there but I have not personally used them so I don't know if they work or not.

Here's one:

And it isn't as scary as it looks in that picture, I promise. :))
