First Week of School

So my first week of school is over. It was nice: inservice on Monday and classes started on Thursday.

I'm teaching the same courses as last year: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Algebra 1 (8th grade). It seems like a much nicer group of 8th graders than I had last year: this crew has a lot less bullying in it. The Biology class is also one of my favorite groups when I've filled in other classes. Hopefully it will be the same now that they're in my class.

I'm pretty pumped about Physics. Last year I had one of my lowest ability groups ever, but they went the furthest of any group I've ever taught. Somehow they really clicked with my teaching style. They were awesome! This year, I have probably one of the highest ability groups ever, so I'm hoping to do amazing things with them.

We're entering our nadir in enrollment. The high enrollment classes have all graduated. However, thanks to oil and other things, we have an enormous kindergarten: 45 students in town and 7 students at our rural campus. It's job security! In fact, the school's enrollment is up by 20 from last year. In a state where enrollments have been plummeting (including this district) that's great to see. We cover over 1000 square miles in part because of neighboring districts which closed due to a lack of students.

This year we have 443 students, in grades K-12. It's exciting to see a little hope!

I can imagine some of the students have a long bus ride.
