I am not sure how I feel about this. I will be interested to see how the teachers feel about this. Dr. Barge will give several choices according to this AJC article.

I'm disappointed in this decision. It's a copout. I thought he was going to fix things rather than pass the buck.

I still think the STATE should look at the Singapore math program.

I am disappointed too. I am wondering if too many of the folks who caused the problem were allowed to get their way. I am going to be asking a lot of questions and voicing my concerns.

As the State School Superintendent, he needs to take a business approach to this. He needs to take a good look at the failing programs in the curriculum and then fire the bozos that implemented them as they made the poor decisions that led to this mess. Take a look at the competition (countries) whose customers (students) are excelling. Then ask, how can we use what they're using and make it work for us?

Singapore and several other Asian countries consistently lead the world in math and science scores. What is in their curriculums and the way the instruction is given that makes their students outperform the rest of the world? Now lets take what they're doing and put it in our classrooms.

I know the Legislature has said they would step in if it was not changed. I know where my next call will be going. I see this as a broken campaign pledge. A politician doesn't get many chances with me when it comes to promises made to my face.. This is one big strike out!

I can't stand elected officials who will not do the job they promised they would.

I am very disappointed. I expected better from him. We need a statewide program that WORKS! I agree with Fox, his approach is a total copout! What about districts that decide "oh, well. can't afford to change it". This simply will not do and it's not good enough!

Well, just dang! He responded immediately! Here it is:

"Re: Math
,
First, thank you for your vote, Second, please understand that the high school piece was a priority from the Governor, the legislature, and the parents as it will be directly impacting graduation rates VERY soon.

We are keenly aware of issues in the earlier grades as well and will make sure those are addressed as well during precision reviews conducted by math teachers from around the state.

Hope this helps."

My take from that is that he is looking for immediate fixes at the high school level and allowing districts some customization may assist with that. Dunno.

So does that mean it wasn't his priority?

I think he's backtracking now with his statement about earlier grades.

What do you know. Looks like we elected a politician to the office.
