Computer Question

The strangest thing has happened to my laptop. I was using it Friday when a popup from Norton said an update had been loaded on my computer and I needed to restart for the changes to take effect. I selected restart and my computer shut down and then rebooted, but not fully. All I have is a black screen with a line curser in the upper left corner. I restarted several times with the same results. This is upsetting because I need to take it with me when I travel. It's not a company laptop as they don't provide me with one. Do any of you technical saavy guys have any ideas?

Maybe you can contact "A Friendly Geek" and he may be able to help. I communicated with him briefly about this site and he was very helpful.

I wish I knew what happened in your circumstance, but I have heard of viruses posing as legitimate things, such as anti-virus programs. I don't want to guess and not be telling you the right thing.

I was gettiing ready to send A Friendly Geek an email when I decided to turn it on one more time and the thing booted all the way up. It's a miracle! I never had one do that to me before.

Do an error check now and check the box to fix errors. Then do a defrag. Odds are that you have a bad sector in the hard drive and it could do it again.

I got a couple of different error messages after it booted up. I'll do what you suggested.

What were the error message?

I stopped using Norton many years ago just because of these issues. I have used AVG for about 5 or 6 years now and never had an issue.

What happened is when Norton updated, it over wrote a section of the boot sector and some of the OS's boot files. Mcafee use to be really bad about that years back when I had my computer shop.

Depending on what your operating system is, you might be able to do a "restore", just depends on how much damage Norton did.

I've use AVG for years and never had a problem. Norton and those others always try to trick me with those updates. I accidently click on one and I had to go in and remove the software. My AVG worked fine and so did my computer.

I'm going to go with AVG since ya'll are giving it great reviews.

Here's the latest free version. Go to the bottom of the screen and click on the free button. Don't ever pay for the upgrades. Not neccessary.
