Can you wake yourself up from a nightmare or night terror?

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
Mei Lan's thread about dreaming about Sadie reminded me about my almost dream last night. It started out with a very rough, almost hoarse male voice saying "come in." I immediately woke up and sat straight up in bed and looked at the spot in my room where I believed the voice to come from (the corner by the closet). My heart was racing so fast that it took over an hour before I calmed down enough to go back to sleep. I hate it when that happens, but as I lay there, I really felt like I had just avoided something really bad.

Has that ever happened to you?

I thought I had a nightmare last Tuesday night but I woke up and learned that it was real.

I HATE THAT KIND OF THING!!! I'm usually able to wake myself up from a bad dream. Not always, but usually. Like I'll be being choked or something, and I'll try to scream and nothing will come out, and I keep trying, and finally I'm able to scream, only it's a feeble little "Ah" but it wakes me up. :D :D :D

Usually I have the bad dream and then can't get a good rest for days afterwards (that is for very very few times I've had bad dreams). Most of my dreams either are silly, funny or just too crazy to make anything out of.

No, but that description sort of scared me!

I don't have many dreams that I remember. I have been awoken with someone calling my name. Of course there's usually no one there. I've really had only one nightmare that I can remember, when I was going through a bunch of stuff with the ex, just before the split. I dreamed he shot me in the head and I actually felt my head explode. That was scary!! Got rid of him real quick after that. :yeah

I was watching a TV show the other day and this lady was talking about dreams...Dreams are telling your body something....One lady in the audience told the same dream you had and she said it was because there is something you need to say to someone and your not saying it....so you keep it inside....so that's why you are not able to scream....

I rarely dream, but normally if I wake up in the middle of a nightmare, it just continues after I go back to sleep.

It bothers me for a while after it happens, but it's usually because I keep wondering if I'm actually awake or not,

I do recall trying to scream a couple of times and not being able. And I woke up too. :)

I woke myself out of a dream Sunday night.

I think it had something to do with eating at Huey Luey's that evening.

It's my understanding that everyone dreams; if you don't remember them, that's a good sign that you're getting quality sleep. I've remembered my dreams for a good number of years now. :( But it is getting better, thank the Lord.

That makes me feel better because most nights I don't remember mine. On the other hand, when I do remember, it's usually not the good dreams..

I can't remember a night without dreams.
In fact some nights I am flying so much in my dreams that I wake up tired.
(all that arm flapping)

Could be, I'm not saying I did a lot, I just did all I could.
But that was 40 years ago.
