Birdwatcher shows himself to be a reasonable person.

The Sound Guy

Pursuit Driver
He just wanted to show how she was ignoring the rules. He sounds like a reasonable guy I'd like to know.

The man at the center of the Central Park “Karen” fiasco has said he will not cooperate with the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation, according to a new report. Christian Cooper told the New York Times on Tuesday that Amy Cooper, 41, has suffered enough since the May encounter that destroyed her career and reputation. Amy Cooper was charged on Monday with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree. “On the one hand, she’s already paid a steep price,” Christian, 57, told the paper, referring to the criminal charge. “That’s not enough of a deterrent to others?”

The avid birdwatcher added, “Bringing her more misery just seems like piling on.
“So if the DA feels the need to pursue charges, he should pursue charges. But he can do that without me,” he said, adding that greater principles are at stake.

I was speaking with a friend who's dog is her baby... she had a different take on it. She said she had heard prior to when the camera footage starts, that the man called the woman's dog over, by name, and had treats out after threatening that she would not like what he was going to do.

I said the woman seemed like a crackpot and I was distressed seeing the dog hanging by the leash. She agreed about how the dog was choking, but said if it was her she would be freaking out too and hold her dog tight to her.

My friend said, "I would panic if someone who threatened me, obviously hated my dog, called it by name and pulls out who knows what from their pocket to feed my dog."

There is admission by him that he called the dog over and had treats to feed the dog.

Christian said he responded: "Look, if you're going to do what you want, I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it."
He then claimed that he called the dog towards him
with "dog treats I carry for just for such intransigence." He later clarified with CNN that he keeps the treats to encourage dog owners to put their animals on a leash.

He didn't get a chance to beckon the dog "before Karen scrambled to grab the dog" and yelled: "'DON'T YOU TOUCH MY DOG!'"

"That's when I started video recording with my iPhone, and when her inner Karen fully emerged and took a dark turn," Christian claims.

Amy Cooper told CNN: "He was running in an open field. This man, he was bird-watching. He came out of the bush."
In response to Christian Cooper's comments that "I'm going to do what I want, but you're not going to like it," Amy Cooper said: "I didn't know what that meant. When you're alone in a wooded area, that's absolutely terrifying, right?"

Hmmmmmmm...

In reading the comments, several local New Yorkers know Chris and how he threatens then feed people's dog so they freak out and put the damn dog on a leash.

Both of them need a fine I think.

This comment sort of has elements of all the comments and again notes how Chris has horrified many a dog owner with a threat then calling the dog over to feed it unknown food from his pocket:

Psst…there’s a little more to this Cooper/Cooper story…

Amy Cooper’s intentionally racist act is the important national story here, because it’s representative of a set of abhorrent, systemic problems.

Chris Cooper’s habit of confronting dog owners is only of hyper-local interest. And it’s not representative of anything, other than Chris’s personal behavior.

But when the national stories refer to “birdwatching while black” or “simply for asking an entitled white woman to put her dog on a leash,” that’s not true.

Chris takes dog treats with him into the Park, specifically so he can confront dog owners. When they don’t do what he asks, he pulls out the treats and says, “Well if you’re going to do whatever you want to do, I’m going to do what I want to do,” and starts feeding the dog against the owner’s will, to panic them into running over and controlling their dog, to get the animal away from Chris and his “treats.”

That is absolutely a threat, and totally inappropriate. You do not invite other people’s dogs to ingest unknown “food” without the owner’s consent. Even worse if it’s over the owner’s express objections. Dogs have food allergies. Owners have no idea why a stranger is feeding their dog as an act of aggression — maybe it’s even poisoned?

You wouldn’t approach a parent, tell them how to control their toddler, and then if/when they don’t comply, say, “hey little girl, want some candy?” and give the kid candy to eat from your pocket while the alarmed parent screams “No! What is that?!? Stop!!” But this is the game Chris plays with dog owners. I know of at least two identical incidents with Chris that preceded his encounter with Amy Cooper. Exactly like that. She’s a racist, but she didn’t start behaving like that in the video because Chris politely asked her to leash her dog. This might explain why he’s been SO gracious toward Amy Cooper in the aftermath. He knows what role he played and I think he probably regrets it now.

Having your dog off-leash in a posted leash-only area is wrong, sure. Planning to intentionally confront people and make them panic that you could be poisoning their dog so it forces them to grab and leash their dog is really f’d up.

White people have to see themselves in Amy Cooper and explore what lurks in their hearts. Chris needs to leave the dog treats at home and confront others like a normal New Yorker.
