Baptists - are they different from Mormons?

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
Now, let me start that I am a member of a Baptist church, but grew up in a Methodist church. So, when I get the opportunity to get into a Bible study that digs into what we believe and why, I LOVE it. Over the summer, our church had a Bible study on just that. They talked in depth about the differences in being Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, etc. It was emphasized in this class that each of these religions are different, but all of them believe in Christ and that we were simply learning about what our church believes and why.

So, with that being said, is being a Baptist a cult?

I ask this because I learned that the dispensationalism theory wasn't adopted until the 1900s and now it is widely accepted, especially in the SBC. Methodists, Presbyterians, et al. don't teach dispensationalism because they believe in predestination. Now, this is a completely different methodology from other Christian churches so it leads to me wonder if it's like Mormonism, could it be considered a cult?

Just a question I'm throwing out for a civil discussion. If this is something that is going to get your panties twisted, please walk away now or risk being called "cray cray." ;D

There's no doubt we have been called far worse than a cult. "Cult" is mild aside from how Hollywood describes us. It is my belief that any denomination that teaches Christ crusified for our sins and the only way to heaven is through salvation by grace and through the blood of Christ is on the right path.

My pastor used to say...and I agree...that the worst thing that ever happened to Christianity is "organized religion".

He also described "predestination" this way (NOTE: I personally don't believe thinking either way about it determines a person's salvation). He said as you approach heaven, there may be a banner over the gate that reads: "Whosoever will may come". Once you walk under it and look back, the reverse side would read, "Chosen before the foundation of the earth"

That's a difficult concept to understand, but it's something I don't feel we will understand until we get there. ;)

I have been a member of the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, the Church of God and non denominational churches. My home church is non denominational. As long as the doctrine is in agreement with what the Bible says, I have no issue as I am a follower of Christ.

Dispensationalism - in there are seven ages that we have gone through or will go through. Innocence, Conscience, Government, Promise, Law, Grace (we are currently in the dispensation of grace), and the Millenial Kingdom.
