Anybody here that quilts?

I'm considering taking up quilting, as I can do much anything else "crafty" right now. I think that since I can piece a quilt using a machine, it should be easier on my wrist. Whether, or not, I can do any hand quilting to the finished product is something I'll have to find out.

Just wanted to see if anyone else here quilts, so I can pick their brain.

:p

Thanks, Diva!!!

I do not quilt, but I am going to learn. I can piece together a blanket, but I am not sure about the quilting part. The blanket Diva mentioned is pieced, but not quilted. My friend's mother is going to show me how soon, as she has a quilting machine ( or maybe a long arm sewing machine). Quilting by hand is a dying art. I can't do that - my fingers just don't work that way; I can sew on my machine all day, but you can forget me sewing a button on pants.

Hand sewing is, indeed, an art. At one time, long ago, all my sewing was done by hand. I've been studying up on the different hand quilting techniques, after its pieced. My favorite is the Amish fan pattern, and it looks like a great place to start, for a beginner. I've made some smaller, wall hanging quilts in the past, but want to tackle a larger project now. It's a bit intimidating, but something I really want to do.

I might have some Q's for you, from time to time. :)

The Queen does all types of different crafts...except quilting. Come to think about it, I'll have to ask her why she doesn't.

I did years ago. Some day I will again. But it'll be a few years. It's enjoyable, but very involved. You can actually just pay to have your tops quilted by machine.

I really want to make my kids each a tshirt quilt.

I helped my Grandmother quilt some many, many, years ago. It was so fun! She has not done any for several years now - she is 93-years-old.

I was looking on YouTube at some tutorials. I think I might like to start with a Jelly Roll Quilt. You can get a quilt top done in an hour!

Did y'all use a quilting frame, or hoop, for the hand quilting?

Red Hen Fabrics in Marietta has machines you can go and use. Obviously you have to pay, but they have those big frames, etc.
Not sure of the rates, and it is a bit of a drive.

My machine is currently broken. Actually I have 3 machines that don't work (I was given 2 of them). Last week I found out that we have a local business that is Singer certified for machine repairs (if that's a real thing...I haven't checked). I'm debating on which machine to have serviced...my 20something year old Brother machine, or the one in the sewing cabinet. I wish that lady would make house calls, cuz she would probably be able to tell me which is the best one to have serviced.

My mother-in-law quilted a lot! Sure do miss her. I have several of her hand quilted beauties. She used a home made quilting rack that she could wrap the string up and raise and lower it from the ceiling when she wanted to quilt. :love

It looked like this, see the strings suspended from the ceiling? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HjLnPtTKlqA/Uo4aEiQ7_YI/AAAAAAAAO3w/D0iYJTUdTlM/s640/1121HRFFriDudley05.jpg

That's a great idea! I watched a youtube video, last night, of this elderly lady quilting. I just loved watching those old, experienced, hands sewing on her quilt frame. :love

I sooooo wish I'd paid more attention to my granny when she was sewing. She never quilted, but she'd make my sister and I dresses.

My Dad and my husband made me a quilting frame many years ago. Somehow during our move (10 years ago) my two poles came up missing. :( I haven't quilted since we moved.

So, you just attached the fabric to the poles, and rolled it on one end as you work your stitching along the quilt?

How far apart were the slots for the poles?

I'd have to measure. I don't remember. And, yes, you should "rolled" it as you quilted.

That frame looks very portable & easy to use. I've seen a few that looked kind of cumbersome. I'll have to see what I can come with. Thanks Madea!!!
