Wenlock & Mandeville are the mascots for the 2012 Olympics. They are cyclops and that yellow thing in the middle of their heads is supposed to represent the yellow taxis in London. I don't know they just look freaky to me.

Remember Izzy, the mascot from the 1996 Olympics?

Which network / channel will be airing the olympics this year?

BBC is broadcasting the opening LIVE now. I think NBC has the rights to broadcast it here, but it will be mostly taped segments

I've been bitting my tongue on this, but don't they look like sex toys?

Not that I have any, just seen pics on the interwebby.

They've been billed as the worst since Izzy.

I would fully agree with that. I think they are the worst I have seen. The shameful thing about it is someone probably got paid for that. ::)

I can't identify with them. They're clearly made up things which are transient and meaningless. They are clearly designed to be free of any gender or any other kind of bias. No one can identify with them. Other mascots have some kind of meaning: my college was the Wolverines (fierce), I taught at a school whose mascot was the Green Waves (they'll wash over you). I've been a Wildcat, a Hornet, a Falcon, a Sioux, a Trojan (the safest mascot), and I've been a Bulldog for the last 6 years.

Perhaps I'm obtuse, but why do the Olympics need a mascot?

To me, the Olympics go back to the Greek tradition where (according to the legend) all the cities would stop any wars and battles during the Olympics. To me, the best representation would be an ancient Greek athlete perhaps with more clothing or else discretely positioned.

I agree with this. I think they're silly. I tried very hard to watch last night, but really it was annoying. If I were 17 I bet I'd think it was awesome.

Actually, all of that plus the mascot thing has made me think of "The Hunger Games". (excellent read, BTW. All three)
