Spotify to remove Neil Young's songs after Joe Rogan ultimatum

Neil was a significant influence in early rock music, and he had a few hits that were pretty decent. Pretty good musician, not a great vocalist. He was in the news a few years ago with a plan for lossless music streaming, but seems his system sucked in comparison and quickly died.

But in recent years it seems like he's fighting to remain relevant.

True story.... The TrophyWife and I were having dinner in Paris and in walked Neil Young with Daryl Hannah.

They sat two tables away from us.

Ole' Neil looked pretty shop-worn and definitely out-kicked his coverage in dating (and eventually marrying) Daryl Hannah.

Neil young is married to Daryl Hannah? :cantbelieve: Who knew... not me. :dunno:

Obviously there are no Neil Young fans here. I am a fan he is in my top 10 on pretty much any list. He is an acquired taste much like Dylan, Townes or Tom Petty (I am a fan of all three). I like his voice it is unique and real. Neil is a savant and one of a kind much like Dylan. You are cheating yourself if you don't dive into some of his catalog. I disagree with his political views on pretty much every subject. This does not diminish his genius. Pretty much everyone who matters in music is a fan. He has pulled his music from streaming services before this is nothing new. I suspect his new wife is in his ear with her liberal hippy view of the world. It really does not effect me if he pulls his music I don't use Spotify anyway. There are other means of buying/recording artists. Bye the way GD to say Neil is a pretty good musician is the same as saying Tom Brady is a pretty good football player.

He auditioned for the Monkees too.

His song Southern Man was hated in the south. Lynyrd Skynryd addressed Neil Young in Sweet Home Alabama.

Well I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well I heard ol' Neil put her down
Well I hope Neil Young will remember
A southern man don't need him around anyhow

As a I mentioned before, he’s Canadian and moved to LA so that explains all I need to know about a washed up once great music influencer. To put it in bluegrass terms, he’s like listening to and liking Bill Monroe sing. You only do because that’s what’s expected of you as a bluegrass fan.

Boss the feud between RVZ and Neil was mostly media hype fake news. Very true that Ronnie wrote that verse of Sweet Home Alabama about Neil. Also true he wrote it partly in response to Neil's Alabama. Ronnie also said that Alabama was the inspiration for Sweet Home but the lyrics were just words he used to go with ED King's riff and not a condemning of everything Neil. Ronnie just like the sound of it. Neil said Southern Man and Alabama was a straight out shot at the George Wallace types not the whole south. He also said he did not mind being mentioned in a Skynyrd song because his song Alabama was condescending and he basically fired the first shot so Sweet Home was a fair response. He liked Skynryd and said he thought they played with heart and drive like they meant it. Music is very subjective or there would only be one genre the whole world listened to not thousands of artist with varying styles. To ignore variety because of politics or a closed mind only lessens some of life's joys. And J-Man people don't have to like Neil or Mr. Monroe because that's what they are expected to do. Mr. Monroe invented blue grass or at least the genre maybe people respect him more so than thinking he has a good voice. Or maybe they just like the Mandolin and know a master when they hear him. As for Neil WTH does his birthplace or the fact that he moved to Laurel Canyon where everybody else in the sixties did have to do with his talent? If you think the old man can't still rock I will agree you don't know anything about him.

Ronnie in his Neil tee and Neil in his Skynyrd tee.

Regardless of all that...Young thought he had the clout to force Spotify to cut Rogan's show, and it backfired on him. Typical Liberal, wanting censorship for people he doesn't agree with.

I've never listened to Rogan, didn't even know who he was until all this about his COVID views broke. But the man has the right to his opinions and should be free to express them. Anyone who disagrees can simply not listen.

When my family moved from Augusta to a mid-Michigan small city of 16K people, all white; we were always being accused of being racists because we moved from the south. The dumbasses up north believed everyone in the south was racist and Young was no exception.

100% agree they still do and I am sure he still does. In my lifetime I have worked with Yankees, South Americans, Europeans and Asians who all believe we are inbreed slave owning hillbilly's right up until I fixed problems they could not and they just kind of stared at me confused and in wonder. Look I am no fan of Neil's politics in fact I am pretty much the polar opposite. That goes for most entertainers too. My point is I appreciate his talent and ignore his politics. Another thing related to this post is the fact if anyone knows anything about Neil he does not give a damn that he was removed or about the money. His decisions his whole life have proved that. I hear a lot of talk from both libs and hawks about standing your ground, being a rebel, not giving a damn about what others think, standing up to the man, defying authority, putting your beliefs first, Neil is the living embodiment of that. It is cliche but this guy lives music and has always put it first even to his great detriment sometimes. If you like music you had better look at it the same way because 80% of these folks are liberals. After all this Neil talk I think I will put on (yes vinyl) After the Gold Rush while I am doing some billing this morning.

I give him that, he's a true "music man" similar to Willie and many other "lifers" and that's something to be proud of and to stand upon. I'm not bashing him for his music talent at all even though I never really followed him. I just think he's an arse for drawing the line in the sand over the issue and thinking that he's important enough for people to really care. He's better off sticking to music and enjoying his life and legacy....stay out of politics or get bashed from the left and right.

I don't do Spotify... I wonder how many who use Spotify even know who Mitchell is... or listen to her.

I guess these artists think what they did in the 60s, sticking it to the man, is going to make them heroes.

So ridiculous. Watch for a wave of cancel culture to be butt hurt this next week over it.
