Trump says coronavirus relief executive order could come by the end of the week 'if Democrats continue to hold relief hostage'

Question....isn't it true that if he uses an executive order to temporarily kill the payroll tax, wouldn't that be just a delay in paying it (meaning everyone would get hit hard at tax time next year)?

Not sure

My problem with payroll tax relief is that mainly helps those who likely need help the least, they still have a job. (Like Govt employees) I'm lucky, our business is not having a problem since we build equipment that supports the internet and our factories have not been hit. (yet).

Those that were laid off because the business failed that they worked for because the $#%@# Govt picked winners and losers in shutting down businesses are the ones looking at mortgage payments they can't make. The $600 a week has helped them, but even if they get a job at a much lower pay, the lack of a 6% tax won't help much.

I'd prefer giving relief like before: getting money to the companies to keep people on the payroll. Just need to add capital punishment for anyone obtaining the money from fraud.

I did some research and yes, Trump can postpone the collection of payroll taxes but not forgive them. Congress would have to pass a law to forgive them before next tax deadline.
I don't see where postponing collection of payroll taxes would be beneficial. It's just kicking the can down the road.

On a side note. Now that the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit has expired, my organization has experienced a very significant increase of applications coming in.

There would be massive pressure on Congress to forgive the deferred taxes before they become due. Congress can't agree on anything so I'm not sure they would ever get it done.

This is straight out of the Democratic playbook. I have said for months the GOP needs to get serious and lay in the mud if they want to win. Personally it makes me want to puke. It proves a politician is a politician and will sell their mothers in a two dollar whorehouse for a vote. I think the strategy is good but the means used is pathetic.

Take that Nast Nancy... right out of her playbook... of course the MSM will not cover him with adoration like they do her:

Trump already predicted sidestepping lawmakers will have lawsuit consequences but dared opponents to deprive Americans of relief.

"If we get sued, it's [from] somebody that doesn't want people to get money," Trump said. "And that's not going to be a very popular thing."

Agreed. Ignoring if they are actually legal or can actually be implemented, from a political standpoint, the executive orders are a great idea. Trump can boast about doing what he can to help people when democrats won't compromise on their crazy demands. If the payroll tax deferment actually happens, he can also make the argument that, if he is reelected, he'll get congress to forgive the postponed payroll taxes. Essentially buying votes with tax money....gotta give him credit from a political standpoint.

And this might have just won the election for him.

Nancy Pelosi says the executive orders, "...don't give the money in enhanced benefits, but puts a complicated formula there which will take a while, if at all, to accomplish to put money in the pockets of the American people." How can it being reduced be a complicated formula, as compared to the $600 a week? It's not. Instead of issuing unemployment checks that included $600 from the fed, those checks will now only include $400. Here's what Pelosi is really saying, "The reduction to $400 now gives more people incentive to return to work, which will result in less unemployment and a growing economy. More people returning to work will reduce the risk of a great recession, which is what the Democratic Party needs to defeat Trump. We have been saying all along since the historic employment rates were occurring is the need for a recession. You heard us say that many times over the last three years. We want the $600 a week because it takes away the incentive for many people to work. We want the American people completely dependent upon the government, because that will give us more power over them."

I think this is a purely political move. There is no way these orders are legal and they need to be challenged. Look how far we have come since Bush started signing statements. Now Trump is executing tax policy by executive fiat. Nothing would stop Biden from raising taxes if Trump can lower them. Constitutionally this is an absurdity, but hopefully it will serve to get Congress off their ass to do their job.

Of course it is. But, it's an election year and one with lots of variables that no one can predict.

It will either win the election for him or get congress off their butts.

I think the real intent of the executive orders were to do just that.

Me thinks Trump is trying to get the state governors to put pressure on their congressional leaders to get their shit together and pass coronavirus relief!

...following a day of state officials questioning how they could afford even $100 per person in additional weekly payments. He told reporters as he returned to Washington that states could make application to have the federal government provide all or part of the $400 payments. Decisions would be made state by state, he said.

<snip>

Aubrey Layne, secretary of finance for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, said in a phone interview Sunday he believes it would be feasible for Virginia to participate in such a program if states are allowed to use money that’s been allocated to them under the already passed CARES Act. He said his preliminary understanding is that states can do so, but he and others are waiting to see the rules published.

The better solution, Layne said, would be for Congress to pass legislation.
