Zimmerman family challenges Holder on New Black Panthers, says no arrests ‘based solely on your race’

Monday, obtained exclusively by The Daily Caller, a family member of George Zimmerman asked the nation’s top law enforcement officer why he has chosen to not arrest members of the New Black Panther Party for their rhetoric — some of which may fit the federal government’s definition of a hate crime — throughout the Trayvon Martin case.

The family member believes the reason Holder hasn’t made those arrests is because he, like the members of the New Black Panther Party, is black.

“I am writing you to ask you why, when the law of the land is crystal clear, is your office not arresting the New Black Panthers for hate crimes?” the family member wrote to Holder...

Re: Zimemrman\'s call out Holder/DOJ

I agree. A hate crime is a hate crime. Doesn't matter what color. Well, it shouldn't.

He probably won't bother to reply...since he knows they are right. But since when did "doing the right thing" ever influence the P-Bo administration? :tapfoot2

I admire that they are showing some guts in a difficult situation. I suspect they will come out of this on top.

Wonder what Sharpton and Jackson have to say about this?? Oh, and Holder won't do squat...........you know, it's in his genes.

Zimmerman is missing and his defense team just quit. The guy has problems .
But he has been in touch with the prosecutor. Definitely not your "normal" situation.

It's my understanding that he had been "in hiding" and in fear for his life. A little different than missing.

But, something isn't right with this defense team. While I will readily admit to never having worked with such a high-profile case, holding a press conference and announcing a "withdrawal" from the case, stating your client hasn't been in touch, etc. is completely out of the norm. In Georgia, the withdrawal procedures are very specific. And you can't just "quit". They even stated they were willing to continue on the case and they still believed in his defense. Their whole press conference rang very odd with me.

I'm not in the legal profession, but I agree...it sounds really weird.

But there are no active criminal proceedings against him right now other than an investigation so they don't have to get the court's approval to withdraw. Right?

Good point, but I don't know the status. At any rate, they sure seem to be skating awfully close to the client confidentiality line.

Hopefully, they are treading lightly. But, I think they will be easy to replace - I'm sure there are several high profile criminal defense attorneys just chomping at the bit to get this one.

I'm seeing that charges are expected to be filed against Zimmerman. His attorneys may be backing out because they can't or don't want to handle a high profile criminal case.

I think that they anticipated criminal charges all along. You don't appoint a "special" prosecutor for any other reason. I believe that Zimmerman is not cooperating in his own defense, possibly because of some sort of a personality disorder, and that poses problems for the team.

My own version of the story goes like this:

Zimmerman is a zealous defender of what he views as his. This includes the neighborhood. This is supported by the numerous and somewhat perplexing calls to 911 over a period of time. I believe that he followed the kid closely so as to make his presence clearly known, possibly in a threatening manner. I believe that the kid turned on him and the two had a physical confrontation in which the kid was shot and killed. He could have backed off, not run away, but stepped back a safe distance, and still kept the 911 operator informed of the situation.

I believe that Zimmerman provoked the confrontation in which the shooting occurred, and should be tried. That is the practicality of the situation, the legalities may be far less clear. The kid may have just as valid a self defense case as Zimmerman, but the kid wasn't armed so we will never know.

You're seeing a lot more than I am. I'm still looking for a story that doesn't keep changing....

I agree. Zimmerman was in his car when he observed the kid and made the call to 911. He obviously got out of his car and confronted the kid; most likely asking what he was doing in the neighborhood and a bunch of other questions, giving the impression he was confrontational. His age and size could be considered intimidating to the kid. Now, if the kid was feeling threatened in any way and Zimmerman wasn't letting him pass; wouldn't the kid have the right to defend himself under Florida's "stand your ground law?"

The bottom line is, Zimmerman was an idiot to confront the kid in any way. He disregarded the dispatcher's instructions.

Holder is an idiot as well and appears to pick and choose which laws he will enforce. The New Black Panther Party is definitely breaking the law in regards to their threats to Zimmerman. This administration is shameful.

He was out of his vehicle while on the phone with 911. (during part of the call)

That is what has been reported.
