Why would they wait??

Why would the "family" members let their Vets wait? Most of these stories are about vets that are 65+. Not only do they have VA but they should have medicare. I know that when my husband has had to go recently the VA wanted his medicare info. Apparently they bill medicare too. I just don't get waiting when there are options.

I don't know, they're nuts. If my hubby needed surgery, he would have the surgery.

I don't know Lisa. I told Husband last night that I just couldn't understand the thought processes of some of these people.
I know that the VA does ask if you have any insurance. Because they will bill that insurance, and then cover what that insurance doesn't. Or, at least that's the way I understand it. They also ask for the medicare card when the vet turns 65 as they bill them as well.
I've had a couple of responses on the story that stated that is not the way it works. They said the vet can't go to a civilian hospital and get care that would be paid for. They were going on about pre authorization etc.
The VA tried the whole pre authorization thing on me the last time Husband went into the hospital. I told them the Doctor said to get to the hospital right away. The VA paid the bill.

True, but the article said something about the only way the family could get answers was only if they went to the VA facility. Well....

These guys should also have medicare. Here in Atlanta you can go in at any time to get the X-Rays, and blood work. Maybe it depends on the % of service connected disability. The video says they can't afford to go anywhere else. He has medicare, he can go and get something done. Sounds like the back break is not service connected (not that, that makes a difference) so there may be an issue with that as well.

As far as this list goes, most definitely it must be exposed and those that approved it must be punished.

The entire VA system is screwed up and needs to be revamped. The current Secretary of Veteran Affairs is a moron. He was a moron while he was a General in the Army.

Sadly it is much easier to deal with the VA when you live overseas. Now we just submit receipts and the VA pays.

We have a friend who is still waiting after three years for his initial evaluation for disability.

Not that it will be helpful, but when he finally gets his disability he will get a lump payment from the time the claim was filed. However if he isn't using a Vet rep, he may need to. I don't know if it will help move things along, but at least there will be someone who can make sure all the paperwork is filed and all the "t"s are crossed.

Y'all my issue is that while yes, these guys are vets, and yes the VA should be taking care of them, they still have options. Why would anyone wait till their loved one is at deaths door before getting them any help? The Vets they are profiling should have medicare, could they not at least get care, at least enough to stabilize them, then worry about the VA care?
Husband was told to go to the hospital last year, by his VA doctor. He went to Paulding, who then had him transported to Austell. They kept him overnight. Well the bills started coming in and I sent the bills back and told them to bill the VA, because the issue was service related. Medicare had paid their part, so all that was left was the co-pay. Yes, the VA tried to give me the whole "we have to approve" run around. I told the person "it was approved by his Doctor, who said get to the hospital." The bills were paid.

I do have a question that some of you might know the answer to, Isn't Kiser basically the same type of system? If you have them, you can only use their doctors, and hospitals?

My hubby works with the VA on accessible vans and he enjoys working with them although it's different in that situation since he is an outside vendor doing work for the VA and not the other way around. But, I had to work with them when my dad was alive and in a nursing home. With my dad, I found the staff very helpful and easy to work with and we never had any issues.
