Dallas-area woman mauled to death by her own pit bulls

Police say a Dallas-area woman was mauled to death by her two pit bull terriers as she tried to feed them at a veterinary clinic where the dogs were in quarantine for a prior attack.:faint::nocomment:

Irving police say 33-year-old Johana Villafane of Irving was pronounced dead Saturday at a Dallas hospital.

A police statement says Villafane was at the clinic Saturday morning to feed the dogs and was in an exercise area when they attacked her.

The aggressive dogs prevented medical personnel from quickly reaching Villafane. A police officer shot and killed both animals and the woman was taken to a hospital where she died.

The statement didn’t describe the initial biting incident that led to the pit bulls being quarantined.

Once these dogs attack... sadly, they should be immediately put down.

Sadly I agree. If your Spaniel gets aggressive and snaps at you may needs some peroxide. If your pit bull terrier snaps you may need a mortician. These dogs have been over bred by complete idiots who should not own a rock much less a living creature. The urban culture as well as bad ass wannabes have basterdized the breed and unfortunately doomed them to fail in most socialized situations. My less than intelligent SIL owns three and has been bitten at least once. I am waiting on the call the from the family about the tragedy.

I know that all dogs can be aggressive based on the way they are raised, trained, or treated....it's bad people, not bad dogs. However article after article of people being killed by pits (domesticated pits, not ones trained to fight or trained to be aggressive) just speaks to the instability and natural defence this breed of dog seem to possess.

And I really questione people who rescue pit bull terriers that have been abused or taken from people who were using the dogs for fights... that just goes against common sense.

I hate to read articles like this as it only brings anger, fear and panic to readers. I certainly feel terrible for the victim but I'm sorry I have to disagree. Our middle daughter owned two pits and our son currently owns one pit so I can say from personal experience that they can be most gently and affectionate bred of dog available. We helped raise the grand-dog here with our two chihuahuas and at times with our other three grand-dogs. The key is socializing them as a small puppy around kids, other adults, other pets and situations. All three of our kid's pits came from different breeders and were/are the biggest babies imaginable although as solid and strong as a tank. The potential is there but just as with any other "weapon" the key is having a responsible owner. Our son's pit is absolutely scared to death of our 15 year old chihuahua. He and his finance' take his pit and her boxer to pet parks often and let them run free with other dogs. They've never had any issues even when other aggressive dogs approach.

I'm not a dog expert, but I don't think bread alone is responsible for this. I do realize that certain breads tend to have their own personality traits, but from what I've seen, a dog's extreme behavior is usually a product of its environment.

Perhaps there's a certain strain of pits that are aggressive, I dunno. But I don't think they all are.

At my old home... a neighbor had a pit puppy... it barked at me... so I started giving it treats... (rub it in your hands and spit on it... the puppy learns your smell)...
Within a month... the barking turned into whimpering for a treat... and soon the puppy and I were fast friends!

Fast forward to the new home...
At one corner... 2x good sized shepherds; at the other side of the lot... a pit and a white shepherd.
The 2x shepherds are getting the treat about 2-3x per week... they are starting to settle down (I think they are gonna take 2-3 months)...
The pit and white shepherd... well the pit is a chicken... he barks at me... but when I come to the fence to give him a treat... he backs off 15-20 feet. The white shepherd in the yard just yawns and watches... he does not care. This pit is probably gonna take 1-2 months... as he is afraid.
If the white shepherd realizes there are treats... he will come over... which probably will get the pit to join in... probably shorten the 'friending' time.

I have done this 'slowly earning the puppys friendship with treats' thing many times over decades...
As long as there is a fence... it has worked every time for me!
