Villa Rica \'Possum Festival Next Summer

The following is from another thread. I thought I'd seperate it from the other because I think it's quite interesting. I know of many communities that have a particular festival celebration every year. Many of them bring it quite a few tourists that helps to boost the local economy.

This Summer, Villa Rica plans on starting the 'Possum Festival. They won't be dropping a 'possum because that's a New Year's event only. However, they will have a Miss 'Possum beauty contest. Contestants are required to have at least half a set of teeth. They will have a 'Possum chili cookoff as well as a 'Possum stew cookoff. They'll have some bands playing music from a stage they will put up in the middle of the street downtown. They plan to have all kinds of dignitaries as well. I hear they already sent an invite out to Nathan Dean to be the Grand Marshall of the 'Possums on Parade. Oh yea folks, this is going to be some big doin's alright. I heard they were going to invite Obama, but decided not to because there's no place to hook up everything for a teleprompter. There's going to be 'possum pie eating contest as well, but don't any of you enter because you won't be able to beat that fat guy from the other site who already has his entry form filled out. There's going to be 'possum pinatas filled with 'possum jerkey for the kids to whack as well. Now you're probably wondering why they're having pinatas since that's a hispanic thing. Well it's in honor of the name of the town. Villa Rica means "rich little town" in Spanish. Bet ya'll didn't know that. Anyway, they want to demonstrate they are indeed a "rich little town" with them there 'possum pinatas. It's going to cost them a lot of money to have them pinatas made to look like 'possums. Ya'll have a good time at 'Possum Fest.

I understand they will have a fireworks display on the closing night of the festival. Since they will be spending a huge amount of money having 'Possum pinatas filled with 'possum jerkey, everyone is encouraged to bring their own fireworks and assemble in the IGA parking lot. Lefty Jaworski will be supervising the ignition of all fireworks. Lefty takes every precaution to make sure such an event is safe; especially since he lost his right arm during a fireworks accident 23 years ago. Nobody is more careful with fireworks than Lefty is now. Lefty is encouraging as many people as possible to buy the really good mortar fireworks in Alabama and bring them back to add to the event.

I found out from a friend on the festival committee they plan on having a "Dress Your Dog as a 'Possum Contest." They only want small dogs entered into the contest. They're afraid that large dogs dressed up as 'possums might scare the little kids and senior citizens. Some are afraid it might literally scare the crap out of both those age groups and they don't want anyone embarrassed. Get it? I thought it was funny when he told it to me. I guess you had to be there.

I will be giving you updates on more of the things they are planning for the 'Possum Festival in Villa Rica as they become available.

Hiram and Dallas should plan to have some kind of summer event held the same week every summer. However, they must remember that 'Possum Festival is already taken.

Ya'll have a nice night and Happy New Year!!!

Clog dancing is really big in Villa Rica. They're mostly looking for Blue Grass bands so people can clog. Any cloggers out there?

You don't want to see me doing anything remotely related to dancing. Really!

And my daughter is a trained dancer. Didn't get it from me.

I think if anyone saw me dancing, they'd call 911 thinking it's a medical emergency. :)) I was never one for dancing. I always played in bands. It's kind of hard to dance while you're playing the drums.

Did I tell you I got an electric guitar and amp for Christmas? It's an Epiphone Les Paul and Fender Mustang amp with 24 presets. I was learning some Johnny Cash tunes earlier today. I really need to take lessons though. At least the electric is easier to play than my acoustic. Besides, I can "punish" the family with the electric by playing some really bad Aerosmith.

I took a little guitar as a kid but didn't stay with it. Not to mention a couple more instruments...

I've cleared several clogs in my time. Liquid Plumber, snakes, coat hangers, you name it. I should more than qualify.

Blue Grass, Schmoo Grass

Actually . . . yes

And while I can't sing my Dad is a great musician and so is my brother in law. Both specializing in bluegrass gospel. :D
