Powerful indeed. He's absolutely correct that the hyphen is divisive. When people say they're African-American, Asian-American, etc. they're not saying they're AMERICAN. My family tree goes back to Ireland and Germany. I don't claim to be an Irish-German-American, or European American. I'm an AMERICAN! Why is it people feel the need to qualify themselves as only partly American?
