That's really looking nice, Jack! And I like the TV idea. Anyhoo, how far down from your pipes, etc., will you hang the ceiling? And 'splain some more about the frame around the garage doors and how the ceiling will look when they're down/closed. Seriously...this is really coming along nicely!

I'll have to measure, but it's approximately 18 inches below the pipes. I actually had to measure up instead of down due to the movement of the garage doors. Sound a little crazy don't it? It's a little difficult to describe, but what I need to do is come down from the joists with a 2x4, about 2+ feet inside the doors to attach the "L" shape wall bracket for the hanging ceiling. That should leave enough space for the doors to be pulled up into the ceiling when I'm finished.

One little problem is not being able to support the ceiling frame for a space approximately 9 x 9 feet. If the wires were used for support in the traditional sense, it would be in the way of the movement of the doors. I will need to run 4 or 6 suspension wires at an angle from joists on either side of the door, to the approximate center of the ceiling frame.

Time will only tell if it will work :'(

18" in my basement/garage (which is like yours) sounds a little bit low. OTOH, as I'm sitting here thinking about it, I have to stand on my 6' ladder to change light bulbs, so maybe it's not too low. I was thinking of doing mine another way than hanging ceiling. A friend of mine has such a space as ours, only it's just basement and not garage. Anyhoo, in her space, the ceiling area was spray painted dark brown, so that everything is all one color and doesn't stand out. I don't know how that would work with the furnace/water heater down there...I guess they would turn those off while painting? They'd have to cover the floor as well. Of course, I'm gonna need pics when you're done with the ceiling part.

Re: Slow going, but at least it\'s going

We need to make a DallasHwy.com calender so you can hang one down there.

Who's gonna pose for it?

This can only end in disaster. Because as sure as the sky is blue, you'll insist on posing in a thong.

I'm far to shy to do such a thing. :whistle

THE CEMENT PAINT DOES "SCRATCH OFF" WHEN YOU DO....THE SNAP TOGETHER IS NICE BUT IT DOES COST A FORTUNE..I HAVE RUBBER TILE ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AND IT STANDS UP PRETTY GOOD IF YOU ARE CAREFUL NOT TO SCRATCH OFF TOO MUCH

I agree with the tiles. I'm just going to buy a box now and then until I have enough to cover the floor. You are right. They are REAL PROUD of that stuff! :BH

Who scratches off out of their garage? Maybe JR with that Corvette...

Re: Slow going, but at least it\'s going

The previous owners of my business property painted the warehouse floor. BIG mistake, the fork lift makes it come up and we've been tracking that crap in for years.

If you want to color the concrete floor, stain it but don't paint it.

OK, I'm gettin' it now. So, is the rest of the ceiling that low? I'm looking at the bottom of the frame next to the top of the regular door at the far right of the pic.

The frame will be right at the top of the 2 x 4's. Not as high as I would like....right at 84 inches. If I have a 7 foot high guest, they'll have to duck. That will be as high as I can make it with all the door hardware. The jury is still out on how it will look or work, so stay tuned 8)

Re: Slow going, but at least it\'s going

Yesterday was a trip....and a learning experience. I watched a few youtube videos on the correct way to hang a suspended ceiling. Most everything I learned helped. The one thing I had no control over was having a second person to help, but as usual, I made myself figure a way to do it.

The tiles will not remain white. I had to use several of them throughout the process to make sure I was getting the frame square. Making everything level is the time consuming task :BH The other process that slows things down is spray painting the frame...especially in cool weather. So the frame will be black and the tiles will be painted a metallic silver.

The idea of the doors vanishing into the ceiling is working just swimmingly! :DN I'm shocked it actually worked!

It's coming along. I just need more than one day a week to work on it :'(

That is looking awesome. Serious bidness.

Thanks ;D

The suspended ceiling is coming closer to being finished. I spent ALL day yesterday with it  It was a tad easier yesterday since I had gotten the process down last week and kinda knew what I was doing. What is taking the extra time is spray painting the grid pieces black and waiting for them to dry before install.

I also purchased metallic paint for the ceiling tiles. It makes them look like metal sheets when dry. The only metallic paint I could find was a Martha Stewart brand which the Deep Homo is REAL proud of! I first bought a can of metallic spray paint, but at 3/4 of a can per tile, it would have been more expensive than the roll on kind.

The garage is approximately 25 x 25 feet, not counting the work shop, which is an additional 9 x 10 space. I'm thinking another couple of off days and it should be done. I have to drop about 7 or 8 fluorescent light fixtures in the grid before I can call it "DONE", so that will be 4 or 5 weeks away.

Here are a few of the tiles with the metallic paint, set in the black grid... 8)
