... and I need to rant and I know my fellow drivers will be cool with it.

The company I work for was acquired back in 2008 by a bigger company, but we essentially operate the way we always have. I manage all the IT infrastructure which is now located in Branson and Springfield MO. We have some new servers that I planned to install mid August. I sent a request to get access to the room I need to get into in Branson as my access card does not have the proper rights. I get an email back saying that all new installs have to be done by a different team and that I am not allow to do it anymore.

WTH?? This is OUR servers and the corp team has no clue how our stuff is all connected and taking the time to explain and document that is going to be a nightmare! Part of my job has always been to physically install stuff. I ENJOY it! I NEED to be able to do that. Now some new stupid policy aims to take that away! Those guys use all IBM. All our stuff is Dell. ALso, there is no way that they will be able to install stuff in a timely manner. I already know how backed up those guys are.

AARRGGHH!! I am so pissed off right now and for those of you that know me, I rarely get upset but this one takes the cake for me. I am prob going to step away for the rest of the day from work because I cannot concentrate on it right now.

Thanks for letting me rave and rant!

Question: Will you still get a paycheck even if someone else does the install?

First, I'm a control freak so I totally get where you're coming from. Take a deep breath and just let them do it, even if you know that they don't understand the differences. Ask lots of questions about what will happen when ... This will tell you how you will need to react to it from here. Don't sweat it, even if it's a total flop and even if you have to spend hours (or days) having to fix the issue. Just go into it knowing that you have no control over this one and let them take the flack for it.
And, from a corporate standpoint, keep this in mind: You weren't hired to enjoy your job... You were hired to do your job.

There, feel better? ;D If not, go pull GD's finger...

Right now pulling his finger may be the only way, even though it would kill me in the process. The president of our division/group is checking into this for me to see why they have made a decision like this. I sure hope he can get an exception to this.

Seriously, if not, don't sweat it. It may shut down the system for the entire company OR it might give you some relief in your job. If they want to handle it, let them - traveling and spending long hours working on computer hardware is vastly over rated, find something new and more fun to do with your spare time!

One of the main reasons I left the corporate world and struck out on my own. If something screws up, it's my fault. I can deal with that much better than relying on others to do work that affects my job.

Without going into details...I went the route of self-employment years ago because my lack of education was keeping doors from opening for me in corporate US. Since then, I made somewhat of a name for myself in the industry, and have had several large companies make me some job offers that were hard to refuse. I could be making considerably more money than I am now, but I sometimes have trouble with the BS and politics that would likely go along with working in the rat race. And, I do enjoy some freedom and flexibility in my current status.

I learned a lot in 20 years in the corporate world, and most of it was by negative example.

Plus, I couldn't have a fart machine in my secretary's office if I worked for a big company. ;D

Reason no. 32323119380293 that I work for a big law firm. My bosses wouldn't even consider bringing a fart machine into the building... And, I've never ever heard any of my bosses fart (including the guy that I've worked for for 20 years) - Praise God for that!!!

Sounds like a drag.

I make really good money where I am and I dont have the business saavy to do anything like I do on my own and make the same money per year. I will suck it up if it does happen to stand but it may push me to look elsewhere for employment in the near future. We shall see.

Not a bit - I love my job and I have amazing bosses!! :love :love :love
Besides, these are smart men - they figured out how to get the hot air to come out of their mouths. That's how they became the lawyers that they are!!

Also this is not the first thing I have had to change. Now that we are part of a bigger company I have to jump through about 10 hoops to do the same thing I did before we were acquired. It gets annoying to say the least.

If you haven't already, you might help your manager by making a business case on why you should be involved.

And, FWIW, thank you for using Dell. My current job is selling Enterprise equipment to small and medium businesses.
