Sick as a dog

I woke up midweek, sore throat. I started with cough drops, peppermints and some old cough syrup still in the cabinet from a year to two back. Now skip ahead till the weekend, and I'm seriously got the crud. Coughing up a lung, chills, sneezing, watery eyes, upset stomach, blah blah blah. My wife says I'm acting like a baby and I need to go stay at my mother's house. She's sprayed nearly everything in the house with Lysol and it smells.

Of course my mom says it has to just run it's course and I'll fell better in a few days, to keep gargling with warm salt water, eating warm soup, hot coffee followed by ice water. I've been taking the alka seltzer plus cold & flu severe and it just doesn't seem to be working,. The doctors office is closed so basically, I need to follow up tomorrow to see if I can get in one day this week.

Folks at work have had the crud too and seem to be spreading their misery to others. This stinks.

At least I can lay on the couch and watch some football... Anyone else out there getting over this crud that been going around?

Dude,,, I'm even afraid to respond to your post!!! BACK, Back I say,,, (Igor, unleash the hounds!). By the by, did you take the flu shot this year? A lot folks I know that took the shot have gotten a ten day crud,,, nothing totally debilitating, just complete misery. Hope you get over it soon.

Hope you feel better soon. Our grandson spent the night with us Friday, he had a bad cough. I sure hope I don’t come down with it now.

Y'all stay away from Christmas parties. Hope you feel better soon.

Agree...

Years ago... used to make 3-4-5 parties each season...
Then I got sick from someone at a party... decided to hold it to 2... family and supply house.

I really expected to get sick... the move just about did me in...
I guess either I have a stronger immune system than I thought...
Or someone in a powerful position (above the clouds)... wants me well and strong.

I probably should be quiet...
Before some bug comes and bites me...

We're having a problem with employees coming to work with the crud and spreading it around. The problem stems from them burning up their paid time off when they're not sick because they don't feel like working that day. When they really need the PTO, they don't have it. The company has recently enacted a policy that if any employee shows up to work showing symptoms of the flu, we have to send them home. That pisses them off, but too damn bad.

Yea, the idea that sicktime and Vacation should be combined into "PTO" was one of the worst ideas that big business has come up with yet.

I'm laying on the couch, suffering not only from a bad case of the crud, but the Falcons are doing what they do best...unnecessary penalties, dropped passes, missed opportunities and Matt Ryan is awful...

Just yesterday... the Soccer team won it all...

Yet today, the American football team (owned by the same guy)...
Cannot do much right.

MeThinks Mr Blank needs to sell the Falcons and concentrate on the United.

I was just bemoaning the fact my owner is old school. We have sick-time. Employees earn 1 hour for each 30 hours worked.

Then, they have vacation. However, I have employees putting in a request for sick-time a month in advance. I spoke with our Area Director and she said it is better they schedule "sick-time" so we can staff properly, than just receive a call out that morning. But not everyone is using it the same. Many lose their 4 or so days because they were not sick and they are not "cheating." I feel like I should clue in the "goodie two shoes" who play by the rules and just lose that "benefit"

We have a wonderful owner. People have worked for him since the 90's when he first started his own company. I don't see any correlation in the ones who use their earned sick-time like vacation and those who don't. Some are lower in seniority, some more senior.

The new way is PTO so you don't force an employee to lie, or as in my case too many people off on one day since the year is running out and come the beginning of January all earned hours will disappear.

Yet... my owner allows pay without vacation. I have several who will receive 3 weeks of extra pay this next paycheck. We don't offer Pay without sickness.

I liked the way my current company does it, (or did it), there was no January deadline, you accumulated PTO a rate per pay period, and if you reached your yearly maximum in your account, then it quit accumulating. So no situations like I see at our customers who have lab people who take most of the month of December off to use up their PTO as people could hit the full mark at any time in the year. You never "lost" anything, you just stopped gaining.

They did add a week of sick time last year, no carry over, because too many considered "PTO" to be all vacation. I had always kept a minimum of 3 weeks in the "bank" for sick time and in case something happened to my or my wife's parents. (in their late 80's / early 90s).

I guess their is no perfect solution. (except maybe to have sick time and pay it out if not used)

My company calls sick days PTO now (to be politically correct). It still has vacation separate from PTO. The problem is they burn their vacation time, then they will call out sick to give themselves three days off instead of their scheduled two and burn through their PTO in no time. I know companies that if you call out sick, you need to bring a doctor's note in order to get your PTO approved.

I would like to see that policy come back...

I suspect there would be some 'test cases' to determine if a hotshot ambulance chasing lawyer could break the rule...
Hopefully it would stick.

Our society, IMO, has seriously gone down hill!

Our policy now is if you call out two consecutive days, you have to bring a doctor's note to show you were indeed sick. Not many of our employees will call out two consecutive days, and those who do bring in the note. It just pisses me off they use their PTO to extend their days off and then when they are really sick, they come in because they have no PTO left and they spread their sickness to others and we end up being understaffed because of it.

We're having a meeting with employees next week and this is a topic I will be discussing with them, but more than likely they won't care and some will call HR saying I am being mean to them. I have a small group of employees who will call our HR hotline each time I tell them to get back to work because they want to stand around and talk to each other than just do their job. Fortunately for me, we have cameras all over the place and HR sees them wandering around spending their time talking to others. The problem is, the company has no policy in regards to making false allegation about others making it impossible to discipline them for it. Unfortunately, my organization is run by a bunch of liberals.
