Jerry Brown says California fires caused by global warming

I remember how frequent fires were in California back in the late 60s and 70s. If you recall, there was a short period of time in the mid-70s when a handful of scientists were claiming the Earth was cooling. Jerry Brown is a fruitcake anyway.

I've been in Pasadena during the Santa Ana winds. Sounded like a tornado that kept coming back for more.

A fire anywhere being blown by 50+ MPH winds is going to grow wildly.

Remember the Tenn fires, high winds blew them all over the mountain in a single night.

I wonder how much snow Al Gore got at his home in TN? Maybe he doesn't live there anymore since his divorce.

California averages one large December wildfire every other year. This has been a particularly tough year because the katabatic (Santa Ana) winds caused by high pressure over the Mojave desert have been particularly strong, and they formed again just a few days ago. Keep in mind that the fires are not usually caused by any atmospheric condition, they are usually caused by man. The winds make them spread rapidly and make them practically impossible to fight.

The case for AGW causing an extended fire season is dubious, a case of them wanting it both ways. One study says that AGW will cause a wetter coastal California, providing more fuel for fires. Another study says that a dryer state will be just make tinder for them. This year was indeed both, a wet spring followed by a NORMALLY dry fire season. It still had nothing to do with this week's fires. Yet another study tried to show a link between less arctic sea ice and the Santa Ana high pressure ridge, but last year was a relatively broad extent of polar ice, and this year is expected to be similar. It is a slippery slope when one starts to blame current weather on climate. It all boils down to whether or not government can blame something that historically occurs every two years on average on something brand new, scary, and supposedly requiring the redistribution of vast amounts of money and the interference of government. Will California experience an extended fire season as a norm some day? Will it be due to AGW? Perhaps, and that is the most that can be said.

One last thought. They have had a fire season there since the earliest settlers. Native Americans have religeous teachings associated with the Santa Ana's. Again, they have a fire season. Who would build a house in those valleys and not want to blame someone else?

...Again, they have a fire season. Who would build a house in those valleys and not want to blame someone else?
About as smart as building a beach home and being shocked when it gets hurricane damage. Or a home built below sea level...well, you know the story. "The government didn't say not to build it here."
