House Dems Call for Biden to Give Up Sole Launch Authority for Nuclear Weapons

In reality, there is the two man rule in place if the US is not under attack. The Sec of Defense, or someone on the list if he is not available, must approve the launch as well. Like Jack Ryan in the novel, if he feels the President has lost his mind, he can say so, telling NORAD that the order is not valid and recommending they not accept any other order from him. Yeah it would cause a constitutional crisis, but better that than a nuclear war.

Unless the president has picked a complete wiener as SOD, he can't launch on his own. Beside, I would expect the leaders at NORAD, who actually understand what launching these things mean, to act on their own if we are not under attack and it appears the president is nutz.

As my dad said, the President doesn't actually flip the switch. This is a Military chain of command thing. They are trained to follow orders, but if they think he's off his rocker they aren't going to launch without some sort of verification. The people who do actually command the launch of the weapons also aren't in a cocoon somewhere, they would be aware of a serious situation, even one involving a launch by the other side. It's highly unlikely that Biden could just wake up on some random Tuesday and successfully direct the launch of a nuclear attack.
 
The other thing they are ignoring is that he is the single approver because of time. From detection of a sea launch to impact may be as little as 20 minutes. My understanding is that Norad can be the second man if inbound missiles are detected because they would have to get the order out immediately if not sooner.

Adding multiple people to the approval list, who will all have to authenticate to give their opinion on the launch, could doom us to having all the missiles we own in the silos if we are hit. It seriously reduces the thread of our nuclear arsenals.

Interesting that suddenly the libs are worried about Biden when they didn't care for the four years that Trump was in office.

The second man is a man, but not just one. If a launch against the US is detected and verified there are plans in place that are like a Chinese food menu. It used to be that the Sec of Def, Head of the joint Chiefs, VP, or NORAD commanding General could identify and back the President. The "football" by the way is simply a coded form of identification linked to a secure communications system. It verifies that the order came from the President. There are also plans in place if a Presidential assassination is part of the attack. The only thing that is like in the movies is that once that order is given the plan is executed. It would be difficult if not impossible to stop once begun.
