Honda and Toyota sales dip 9.5%

Get about 21 MPG with the Colorado around town, up to 25 or so on the Road. I have the V6 with a six speed auto.

I would find it difficult to live without a truck these days. They are too handy.
Truck sales are up because most people find having a truck convenient. They purchase larger items they can't put in a car or mini-van. They are larger and safer. They get better gas mileage now than ever before.

I'll get rid of Big Blue when I have to put a bullet through her block and let her sink into the borrow pit. If that day comes while I'm still driving, I'll buy another truck for sure.

I don't know how any family does without a truck. I use mine daily.

'Course, I'm a contractor and I'm constantly building stuff. But still...

Yeah... I do not know how folks get by without a truck or SUV...

However I have some customers who live in townhouses... who fuss about having to go to Costco to shop for household stuff... they prefer to order it and have it delivered... never mind they are paying for the delivery...

To each their own.

Replace townhouse with condo and well...that's me.

I do have a truck though.

Each person has their own lifestyle...

I just sold a house on a 1/2 acre lot... and bought a place on 4.35 acres...
The PRIVACY, peace/quiet, and space to play...
THOSE are the important things in my life...
Grin!

Agreed. I've got 12 acres in south Georgia waiting for me to retire.

Before this place came available...
I was on the fence about leaving metro Atlanta... maybe even the state.
Goal was to get away from a typical residential neighborhood... wanted some peace and quiet... as well as privacy.

The reality of starting the business over again, either somewhere north or in another state... was what I chose not to do.
BTW: my move was a whopping 8/10 of a mile... driveway to driveway.

Just for fun: Lake Hiawassee area and Chatwick (east of Dalton) were on the short list...

We do not have a truck. There are times it would be nice, but overall not needed. Most of the vehicles around here are trucks or SUV's, and the majority of them are of the large or x-large size. I just shake my head, because 95% of the time it is a single person driving, and they aren't hauling anything.

I can understand the need, but question if all these people have that much need - and how many want it because it is "the thing" to drive?

There's hardly a day that goes by that I don't use my truck for truck stuff. I'm either hauling or towing (or both) nearly every day. I have three trailers at home and two at work. Constantly boards, conduit, etc hanging out the back. The 4wd comes in handy too.

But again, I'm a contractor.

I haul stuff in the bed of my truck to and from work every day.

By stuff...I mean leaves.

Yeeeeaaaarrrrssss ago we had borrowed a friend's trailer so we could purchase something large and tow it home. We had to go to a soccer game first, so we had the trailer hitched up to the Jeep driving to the soccer game. My youngest, around five years old at the time, said, "Hey, look... now we are like everyone else in Paulding driving around a trailer with nothin' in it."

I could have died laughing...

I thought there was a thread on GM... could not find it...

So am posting this here...

GD or anyone on the staff... feel free to move this post to the GM thread if you want to... :)

From an Email:
A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people paddling and 1 person steering, while the American team had 7 people steering and 2 people paddling.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were paddling.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the paddling team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 2 people paddling the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program, with meetings, dinners and free pens for the paddlers. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices, and bonuses. The pension program was trimmed to 'equal the competition' and some of the resultant savings were channeled into morale boosting programs and teamwork posters.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off one paddler, halted development of a new canoe , sold all the paddles, and cancelled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses.

The next year, try as he might, the lone designated paddler was unable to even finish the race (having no paddles), so he was laid off for unacceptable performance, all canoe equipment was sold and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India.

Sadly, the End.

Here's something else to think about:

GM has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US.

The last quarter's results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in
profits while GM racks up 9 billion in losses.

GM folks are still scratching their heads, and collecting bonuses....

IF THIS WEREN'T SO TRUE, IT MIGHT BE FUNNY.
