Geeking it big time

I am thinking to take another serious look at Apple desktops...
And have an Iphone 8plus on my short list for replacement cell phone.

I have thought on and off about moving to apple for years...
The part about the OS and IOS being carefully controlled (rather than open source)... appeals to me.
Not me. I've had both types of phones and I'll take Android any day. But the trick is to stick with high-end Android devices.

Regarding your desktop; be careful that any software you might use will support Apple. Some of the better dispatch and billing software for our industry is only.

Microsoft will be ending support for Windows 7 in just over a year. Might wanna consider upgrading to Windows 10.

Probably one of the best things to happen to your PC, is to have MS stop supporting their software!!! It got to the point I would stop all updates from MS, then I just went to a Google Chrome Book and never regretted it!!!!!

PS, the link to the CPU Cooler doesn't work.

That can cause security risks.

I tried a Chromebook and wasn't terribly impressed. Too many apps that it won't support. But for general browsing and email, quick and inexpensive.

I am not a fan of google...
Use Duckduckgo for searches

And to me: using a chrome book would be kinda like
Sleeping with the enemy...

There is no bigger security risk than running Microsoft,,, bar none!!!!!

The largest security risk is a govt the people do not keep on a short leash with a choker collar...

And yank the chain every now and then... just to remind the feds WHO is in charge..

'We the People'...

I bought the MB, Proc, cooler, Mem and Graphics card from a friends son who is a gamer nut and has already upgraded to the Latest thing. He wanted to get rid of the old hardware, so I bought it. I bought the case, power supply and disk to go with it.

I'm running Ubuntu on this one. I had bought the Steam version of Microsoft Flight Sim, but with the last update to Windows 10, Microsoft Broke it and and Steam can't (or won't) update it. With the push by Microsoft and other major writers to subscription models, forcing me to upgrade to something with features I don't want and pay a yearly fee to do so, I've had it with M$.

So I found out about an open source Flight Sim and I'm running FlightGear on Ubuntu. Yea, it's not quite as user friendly as MS Flight X, but it works just as well in the air and has some cool planes.

I've always loved the B-25 Bomber, Esp the gunships and Yesterday I flew a J model from Cartersville to McCollum just to say I did. Even managed to get it down without ripping the gear off. (Thank goodness they made strong landing gear on those days!!)

That machine will fly on Ubuntu!

I think so. Need to install the DVD/BluRay drive from my Plex Server install MakeMKV and HandBrake and see how it does with video. I expect my DVD compression will be *really* quick now.
I was thinking of trying Makemkv to convert my Blu-ray collection. What is Handbrake? I have not looked up that one yet. I have Plex running as well. I love it!

Friend used to run a program called 'Parallels' on his Mac... then Windows 7... then XL...
He did these ridiculously complicated spreadsheets... traded the markets... made a living that way.

He said TPTB at Schwab could not 'see' through the stack of OS's to the trading platform... that sounds good to me... grin!

Handbrake is a video modification program. I use it to change the ripped video from mpeg2 to a much better compression format, reduces the file size up to 50%.

We love Plex. I run both a Ubuntu server as well as a backup windows server and use ROKU as the clients.

Will Plex handle 3D?

Last I checked, no. They have some technical difficulty with the 3D signaling or something like that. With it not being as popular here, I'm not sure how high it is on the priority list. Since my projector is 3D capable, I investigated to see if I could get a way without buying a 3D Bluray player.

I've read that none of the media software does. Bummer!

Hmmm. I looked up some of the latest and a few people have got it to work, however, the equipment with the PLEX client has to be a 3D device (like a BluRay Player) for it to work. The standard ROKUs don't have the hardware support to send the 3D signal. Bummer.

For us non-educated semi-geeks...
What is different about the 3D signal... is it more dense... more bandwidth needed... special format???

Just curious
