This is some skeery stuff:

This is the future. According to some uncertain estimates, insect-sized drones will become operational by 2030.
These drones will be able to not only conduct surveillance, but to act on it with lethal effect. Over time, it is likely that miniaturized weapons platforms will evolve to be able to carry not merely the quantum of lethal material needed to execute individuals, but also weapons of mass destruction sufficient to kill thousands. Political scientist James Fearon has ven speculated that at some more distant point in time, individuals will be able to carry something akin to a nuclear device in their pockets. - Gabriella Blum

I have learned that the SciFi shows do an amazingly accurate job of predicting the future of technology.

If anyone has been in the military or had family in the military will know that stuff you read about now in the news has already been discovered or in use for many years. These stories are usually last years events.

Take breaking the sound barrier. I think it was announced publicly in the early 70's? When in fact is was done in the early 60's, my father had experience in Navy tests with this.

Now that's something to think about!

Insect size robots, about the size of your fingertip, already exist and some are capable of flight. All that is left is to increase their range and reliability and weaponize them. I'd say we will have something workable long before 2030.

BTW, the next generation of WMD will be bioengineered, not explosive. Nukes are so last century.

I've never been a SciFi fan.

However, just think about it. My first office job was in the "computer room". Literally, the computers to run the business was HUGE and so were the computers and tape drives. Now, what was housed in several thousand square feet can now be put in the palm of your hand. So, it doesn't surprise me that this is possible. Scares me, but doesn't surprise me.

The future is gonna be ...

Different.

For gadgets like that, I'm sure there will be brisk market for "counter-measures."
