Bad Photography

I wish I could show this photograph here. It's that bad. Unfortunately it's not mine and it's copyrighted.

Like most schools, mine uses a photographer to do student pictures and sports pictures. This photographer also takes a team picture. Parents buy these and that's how the photographer makes the money. We use a national company. This year, they announced they were doing something new for the team picture: there would be no team picture. Instead, they photographed the individual athletes and then put them together into a team picture using photoshop.

The Cross Country picture has a background that looks like the default on Windows XP: a field of grass, sunny sky with clouds, and doesn't match the lighting on the runners. The runners themselves were photoshopped to be equal heights. The seventh graders look like giants: huge heads compared to the seniors. Plus, it's ridiculous knowing how tiny some of them are seeing them stand equal height with a really tall runner. One runner in the front had his torso shortened to fit him into the right height, but somehow they didn't touch his arms.

The volleyball picture has the same things, though at least the lighting matches somewhat. They put a volleyball net behind the girls, but its size is "off" from what it should be, and the lighting is still wrong.

I haven't seen the football picture yet, but knowing how short the head coach is, I can only imagine.

So, out of curiosity: is this being done at other schools, or are photographers still taking the few minutes it takes to pose a team picture?

I've seen some less than impressive photos from national companies both when my kid was in school, church pics, family pics, etc.

Seems some of the big name companies sometimes employ "photographers" who are quite amateurish in their skills and experience. I've had the best results using independent photography companies where the owner/partner is the actual photographer.

Why would a photographer want to spend all of that time on photoshop when a team picture just takes a few minutes? It seems like it would be easier and more economical to take a team picture and clean it up...
